Do you think a rabbit can adjust to wooden floor with time? We live in a small 1 room apartment (40 square meters). Josip has a blanket in front of his cage, we had my mothers carpet for a few days but it had to go today, because it really didn’t fit properly in the room (new carpets are really expensive here). Josip does walk on the floor but way more slowly than on the carpet. In the beginning, when we got him, he wouldn’t step on it at all. Do you think I can expect progress with time? I would really love it if he would explore the whole apartment (kitchen/dining room, hall) and not just our not very big bedroom/living room.

I have put a big towel on the place where the carpet was – and when he isn’t active I just put it away (I couldn’t do that with a carpet) so he can run around and binky, I just wish he would explore the whole flat.

        What was your experience?

Some rabbits do not adapt. It is very slippery for them and there is evidence that hardwood can cause injury over time including sore hocks, arthritis, and other issues due to them being unable to get a grip on the floor. They do not have pads on the bottom of their feet like dogs and cats.

You could set up a path of carpet or temporary flooring as a little path through the apartment. If the bunny feel comfortable he’ll move off the path. I think BB sells a cardboard temporary floor runner that the bunny can grip onto with their claws. Then there is always cheap carpet runners you can buy. When the bunny isn’t out you can just roll them up if you don’t want to have them 24/7.

I have a fleece blanket on the floor for flopsy cause she won’t step on the wood floors. So far she hasn’t chewed it and she loves walking on it and playing with her toys on it. When she does walk on hardwood, it’s very carefully or not at all. Since I don’t have rugs I use a baby fleece for her play area.

My rabbits cope happily on wood flooring, it does take a little bit of time for them to get used to it though , but they much prefer the carpet areas of my house to binky and lounge…and dig…and chew..

Louise loves our wood. She loves the carpet, too, of course, but the wood is a different kind of fun.

She does run a little faster on the carpet and generally binkies more on it too. But on the wood, she’s discovered the fun of sliding — she likes to run at full speed until she hits the wood, then she’ll binky, land, and slide across the room (sometimes knocking into things). At first I thought it was an accident, but she’ll go back and repeat that over and over, sliding around in every direction.

Give Josip some time, everybunny is different!

I thought I should update you guys.

Josip learnt to hop on the wooden floor pretty quickly. His blanket is out all the time, and once a day we put a big towel down so it’s easier for him to run, but he adjusted really good.

He still won’t go to the kitchen though…
