        Hello ,

I came home from work today to some blood on my floor and there is a nail that I found also. I checked both my rabbits and looks like one is missing a nail, I’m not sure if I should be worried ? I don’t know how he could have done it?

It is not bleeding anymore and he doesn’t seem in pain and is eating and moving around normally. There was also some small a specks of blood on the wall, could this be where he has flicked his paws to clean them and it has sprayed that way ?

Is there anything else I need to do other than keep an eye on him, I know rabbits hide their pain very well but he seems normal right now

        Thanks in advance

Just an update I checked him further once someone could help me and three of his nails from his back paw are red and seem to have broken off. He wouldn’t dig with his back feet so now I am quiet worried about what has happened. It is only the back right paw that is affected. Any advise on what may have happened would be appreciated.

“three of his nails from his back paw are red and seem to have broken off” – does that mean all three nails are broken? Is it the whole nail that got pulled off or just the tip?
Usually if the bleeding stops, there’s not much to worry. But check if there any signs of broken bones with the back leg. Do you have wire mesh flooring? – rabbits tend to get caught and break some toes.

He could have got stuck, if his nails were too long. He could have poor quality nails that easily breaks, and that’s in part genetic and can to some extent be due to diet and environment. If there’s been bleeding at the breaks it’s good because blood flushes out bacteria + helps healing, but you do need to feel his little footsies for injuries. Are there any remnants of the broken nails left? Is he still eating and acting normal and moving around?

I have a bunny who has a tendency to break his nails if they get even the slightest bit too long, so I have to be very strict about my nail-clipping-schedule.

Hi both thanks for replying . There isn’t any but he does run and jump a lot so he might have got stuck in the carpet ? Quite a bit of the nails have come off there are 3 small bits remaining so I don’t think the whole nail has come off… It is not bleeding anymore and he is moving quite freely and eating and popping. Should I take him to the vet or just monitor him, I don’t want him to get an infection

He could’ve got stuck in the carpet. It’s good that there are little bits remaining. It’s very unlikely that he’ll get an infection, but keep an eye on his feet these next few days so there’s nothing broken. That he’s moving around freely, eating and pooping are of course great signs. If you can trim the rest of his nails to a shorter lenght it’s probably a good thing, it’s often when the nails get too long for that specific individual that they get stuck in carpet or blankies etc.
