I bought a bunny rabbit from pets at home yesterday along with an indoor rabbit cage which they said would last him about a month, i’m not sure if i’ve set it up properly.

I used wood shavings to line the bottom of his cage also i put some hay under is plastic ‘home’ but he doesn’t really sleep on the hay he’s been sleeping/laying on the wood shavings. The only things i need to get him now are some toys and a corner litter tray.

I have another pets but he’s my first bunny so i am sort of new to all of this so please add some do’s and don’ts, thanks.

He is super adorable, is he a New Zealand white? What other pets do you have because cats and dogs can be dangerous if not introduced already in a safe way. I suggest you go on stormy rabbits and 101rabbits.com and check out their youtube and blogs. Those were very helpful for when I first got my rabbit. Try not to buy toys from stores because sometimes the dyes aren’t safe and also because they just don’t seem like the best option. I suggest creating your own. Or getting some sticks and toilet paper rolls. Line the bottom of the cage with newspaper, that allows for easier cleanup. Make or buy a hay holder so that it stays clean and easier to get to. Since it is basically summer I don’t think that wood shavings are very necessary unless it is very cold where you live. You can check out the forums here to get a good idea on how to keep your bunny cool. If you need more advice please feel free to contact me on here or my email just check it out on my profile.

Hi! Congrats on the new bunny!

Where is his litter box? Not sure if I see it?

You should check out the bunny info section on here for sure. The habitat section is great: https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/GreatHabitats/tabid/229/Default.aspx

I recently built a condo, but had an x-pen at first which was super easy and relatively cheap to set up.

Congrats on your beautiful new bun! What did you name him?

Wood shavings are not good for bunnies, especially pine and cedar shavings. There are lots of bunny safe alternatives such as Carefresh or pressed paper pellet cat litters, like Yesterday’s News.

I would advise not using bedding because this can confuse their litter habits. The will associate the places with bedding to be the litter box, so if the whole cage is lined with bedding he might not have such great litter habits. Once you get his litter box fill it with a paper based pellet or bedding and wait to see what corner or area of the cage he prefers to pee on. Also, you will need to get your boy neutered once he reaches sexual maturity. It can vary from about 4-6 months of age. He will go through “bunny puberty” and spray urine, or exhibit signs of sexual behavior such as circling, nipping, humping, etc.

Congrats for your beautiful rabbit. I am also a new rabbit owner, I have Lua for 2 months and a half now and she probably has the same cage your bunny has. I do not use wood shavings or paper, she has a corner litter box she always uses (even now, the day after her spay) and a towel where she sleeps, that’s all. For her, it seems a great set, she loves her cage and likes to sleep there even when the gate is open (12+ hours a day). Day after day you will learn what’s best for your bunny and how he want his stuff to be (he will let you know the right way). Enjoy your bunny, you will be great friends!

Congrats on becoming a bunny parent! Your bun is very handsome.

As the other posters said, once you get his litter tray, fill it with a paper-based litter and your bun will likely potty train himself.

Also, I may be mistaken, but if that’s iceberg lettuce in his bowl, please switch to Romaine or another dark green lettuce – iceberg is too watery for buns and can dangerously upset their digestive system.

Can’t wait to read about your adventures with your new furbaby.

I’m not sure what he is, don’t New Zealand’s have pointy ears that are upright? His kinda flop and other pets I have 3 snakes, 2 cockatiels and 2 cats but don’t worry there all in separate rooms.

                          Thank you
And no that’s not lettuce in his bowl it was cauliflower leaves, Rocket and some watercress, as for his litter tray ive been using wood pellets which seem to be doing the job.

Haven’t decided on a name for him yet but my nephew did suggest naming him Voldemort…. As for his bedding I am planning to switch to straw soon
