This morning around 12pm I gave more hay as usual and she still eats (still some left now but thats usually normal).

But now it is 6pm, she is still on her belly. I have been noticing that for couple hours she kept shifting, moving and lying down.

Strange things: i noticed that she lie down at an opposite position than normally would. She also seems to avoid me, and doesn’t go for the other hay she always love. She runs away to the corner of the bathroom when i come to pet her at the staircase and she has never done that before!

I really think there is some tummy issue. I am about to go get some simethicone. Is it safe for rabbit (even though i might just be  overreacting)? How much should i dose and how often?! Can you provide a brand name or picture so i know which one exactly? (It’s been a while since i dealt with simethicone)

Sorry, i hope what i typed makes sense. I am very nervous right now.

Sorry to hear about your little one’s tummy problems!

I’m not sure where you are in the world which does make it a bit more difficult. However, simethicone is a common ingredient in baby meds. (Just read the ingredient list and buy ones that Only have simethicone in it.) GasX is also simethicone but you have to dissolve it which is a pain (but doable, I’ve done it). I cannot remember the dosage for liquid, I believe the solid tablet was 125 mg. The thing about simethicone is that it does not go into the blood stream which is why it is safe to give to rabbits. However, it may only be a temporary fix, you still may need to take her to the vet.

Gentle warmth, applied to her tummy will also help, your body heat if she will lie on you, or a hot water bottle (I put it in a cardboard box to insolate) will help stimulate the gut. Also gentle tummy massages can be very beneficial for stomach problems. If you search massage on this forum you’ll find more detailed information. there is also dosage information in the forum too, you can check once you’ve bought it.

Best of luck and I’ll be sending you both warm healing thoughts.

You want to get baby gas drops like Little Remedies or something like that. I’m not sure what else Gas X has in it, so I might avoid anything for adults. Read the ingredients list to be sure.

From what I understand its very difficult for a bunny to OD on simethicone. I’m not sure of the dosage, but there are a lot of posts on here with recommendations if you’re able to use the search function to locate the posts.

Usually if you sense something is wrong, it probably is. Has your bun pooped recently?

              Thank you for the reply.

I found this from the forum if this still holds true: Dosage is usually recommended as: 1-2 ml every hour for the first 3 hours, then 1ml every 3-8 hours afterward. This is for strength 20mg/ml. I think Ovol is 40mg/ml so I’m thinking then you give 1/2 to 1 ml instead. You can also use tablet form or 1/2 the125mg gel capsule(for adults) I believe.

              Does weigh affect the dosage?

I checked her litter box, all the poop looks nice round and big. Though is hard to tell when she pooped. I cleaned the litter last Saturday – i am going to clean it again tonight.

I am on my way now to check out some simethicone.

Should i start feeding critical care or is that too early? I will wait tomorrow to see if she ate anything?

I’m in the U.S. and the brand of infant simethicone I got is Mylicon. It’s a liquid that you give in a syringe, which was included. It was on the baby food and supply aisle at the grocery store.

I measured her temperature, it is 97.8F . Thats really low???? Should i still give her simethicone?

How did you take the temperature? If it is that low you should probably see a vet. If not you need to keep her warm. As to simethicone, it cannot hurt.

If you found the baby symethicone, give a few drops once an hour for the first few hours and then reduce frequency to once every few hours. Symethicone does not hurt buns even if given when not actually needed. Keep bun warm (a wrapped warm water bottle) and gently massage tummy if you can (lots of youtube vids on how to do it) or at least lift bun’s backside gently up and down so hips are higher than shoulders to help pass any gas bubbles (bunny yoga).

It is 12:30am right now. About 30 mins ago i went and reheat the rice pack, and she magically just bounced right back.

She groomed and scratched herself a bit; hopped around, alert and active within her small enclosure that i made right outside my bedroom. She kept digging her bedding, ate couple strands of hay and some pellets. As of now she doesn’t just lie down every second like she used to. Her stomach began to make really loud bubbling noise which didn’t happen before. She acts like more like the usual crazy bunny-self.

I think the simethicone really kicked in!!!! (Going to save me lots of vet bills – good job taffy!) I will continue to monitor her til morning. Thank you everyone for your input. I will continue to update if anything happens.

So glad to read she came good! So that was 30 mins after simethicone? I’m curious as that is about the length of time passed when I’ve noted a change when my rabbit(s) has suspected gas.

Here’s a couple pages I’ve referenced in the past when a rabbit of mine has been unwell. You might like to bookmark them or print them out.Or make up your own checklist/ set of instructions.

I saw Taffy’s photo on BB facebook. Such a sweetie! I hope she remains her “usual crazy bunny-self”!!!

So happy to hear she’s bounced back! I too have experienced this with my buns, simethicone can do wonders sometimes for a gassy bun.

You can keep giving it 1-2 a day for a couple of days. As Grey Dove says (btw, hi Grey Dove! Long time no see!), it is a locally acting substance that isn’t absorbed by the body, it just stays in the GI canal and breaks up gas bubbles and then it comes out with the poop. Both Medirabbit and Dana Krempels say it can be given on suspicion of gas, so it’s deemed bunny safe.

I gave 1.2ml of simethicone every hour for the first three hour – 8pm,9pm, and 10pm. I measured her rectal temperature at 8pm and 10pm (hypothermia- since 6pm or earlier afternoon).

At 12am i think that’s when she finally warmed up because she started acting more normal, but i didn’t take another temperature til 7am and it was measured 102.8F- back to normal!! I was going to bring her to the vet only if the temperature doesn’t go back up. I also gave another dose of simethicone at 7am.

I am seeing a dozen of black, ranging from small-to normal size poop. She is also intaking some hay and pellet here and there. So i won’t be giving her critical care at this point. I will provide her with unlimited pellets – looks more attractive than hay.

Either i am treating her gas very early or her young age makes it easy to bounce right back. She still grinds her teeth sometime so i believe she is still in pain, but at least she is eating something.

About the fb photo – Haha yeah!! i told her: you are famous!!!
