So this is my first post; and I’m beyond worried.
I own two rabbits. They are bonded and they are both 2 years old. They have always been healthy in weight and their fur has always been soft and sleek. But saturday i noticed that they both have lost like half their weight! I checked their teeth, their ears, their fur, and felt their little hearts; nothing. No mites, no over grown teeth. Just…. Weightloss. I’m worried and will set up a vet’s appointment tomorrow morning as soon as possible. But still, I would like to hear from more rabbit owners.
Why would they lose weight? What else can I feed them to get them back in weight? Any tips or pointers? Anything helps!

          Hi Ivory

I would suspect parasites, especially since both of them are being affected. Also, mites are not always visible and sometimes are not even picked up with a skin scraping test.

Do they spend time outdoors occasionally? Or have contact with other pets that go outdoors?

I’d certainly get them both assessed by a vet to determine what is going on. Your vet might like to go ahead and treat them with some anti parasitic meds just as a precaution. It might be worth discussing getting a fecal test and blood test done for them.

What is their current diet? You can add things like alfalfa based pellets, small amount of rolled oat, small amount of pepita seeds to help with weight gain. Just be careful not to overdo it as you don’t want to upset the gut flora.

I hope you can find out what is going on. Good luck!

Jerseygirl has covered everything that I would have suggested Parasites is my immediate thought, possibly some sort of intestinal worms. A vet visit is a must. Let us know how it goes
