        Hi

This is just a quick thought.

Last night I was cutting the nails of my male rabbit and his “pinky” was missing the nail completely. Hes fine and its not bleeding or infected, but its not there.

In his medical records ( were given to me when I adopted him) state that his nails were too long and were curling. I think they just took out that nail then when they did his neuter.

Is this ok? Or normal protocal?

It does not bother him so its fine, but I assume that after his neuter aka surgery his little pinky did hurt a lot if he was not given pain meds. Its a stump poor little guy

Hmmm…. Maybe the nail snapped off? One time one of my rabbit’s nails snapped off completely, and it took a long time to grow back. Generally when rabbits nails get really long, they’ll start to curl, but it can generally just be fixed but cutting the nail to the proper length…I don’t think they’d surgically remove it unless there was another issue like it was getting an infection)

How long have you had your bun for?

            Thanks for your reply.
            Since october I had him.
His nail is no longer there and the nail I don’t think its growing again. I will have another closer look.

It’s really hard to say what could have happened, especially if you don’t know too much about his previous situations. (they gave you some records yes, but there’s still a lot you won’t ever know)

The only reason they might remove the nail would be if it broke and got (or was a risk of getting) an infection. Sometimes though when they snap their nails off at the flesh, they can be too damaged to grow back. I believe it took my bun (who snapped her nail off at the flesh) like 4 months just to start barely growing back. And the nail was kinda weird, so you couldn’t even tell it was growing back!

As long as it isn’t giving your bun and discomfort, I wouldn’t worry about it! Good luck!

Thank you so much. I just saw it and freaked, but then realized that it was ok and it was not a new wound.
Well I have one less nail to clip.
It’s hard for me not to know what kind of life he live before. I wish I did know, but then again not knowing might also be a blessing. All I know is that he likes it here with me
