Have any of you had a rabbit that cried for its mother late at night? There’s one, that I’m assuming is in our backyard, that cries for an hour or two past 10o’clock. At least I think it is a rabbit… I keep hearing a rabbit-like cry at night, every night. While I know there is nothing I can do for a tiny wild rabbit… I’m just curious if anyone has baby bunnies that cry like that at night?
I guess my concern is that, when I get domestic rabbits, are the babies are going to cry like that?
My motherly instincts kick in big time every time I hear crying, so I can’t fall asleep until it stops… I neeeed sleeeeep..! >__< There are frogs, fox, dogs, cats, rats, possum, and a giant array of insects in my neighborhood, so I wouldn’t be surprised if something is scaring the kits in the yard… but every night? It’s a little weird… ._.

Baby bunnies don’t cry for their mother. It would be counter-productive. A bunny can cry out really, really loud when it’s in agony, ie being caught and carried off by a predator, but that’s the only time a bunny cries, and that is a blood-freezing sound. Evolution probably favored it because it’s such a startling sound that the predator might drop the rabbit.

Domestic bunnies can utter sounds like grunts and growls and even little faint squeeky noises, but they don’t cry unless they fear for their lives. Domestic buns can make other noises though, they can thump their back legs and re-arrange their habitat and throw their toys around, sometimes in the middle of the night. But no crying or whining or yelping.

Foxes and deer and of course birds and cats can “cry” at night.

I’ve heard a baby rabbit scream before (just about gave me heart failure…) so that’s why it’s weird I keep hearing that sound at night…

Definately not a fox, and not a deer… I guess it could be a bird? Or a kitten… Meh. I hope whatever it is stops soon. I just can’t stand it when something is crying and I can’t do anything to comfort it… >.<

Oh. That’s good to know. Thank you very much!

It really could be a fox or bird. They can make some blood curdling screams like rabbits do. However, for a rabbit to scream every night….. isnt likely. I mean, they die if theyre under too much stress, so its hard to think it could be a rabbit

Here are some sounds a fox can make (there are owl-cries too). The web-site is in Swedish but the video has text in English: fox sounds

Roe deer can call out too and it can sound really scary, like a human in distress.

A mockingbird can imitate many sounds, including animal sounds. They are one of the birds that make their vocalizations during the night (and during the day too).

Ooo I’m going to have to go listen to those animal sounds O:
However, I’m pretty sure it’s a dog barking! It must be a chihuahua or something because it sounds small…
That dog certainly has the weirdest bark I’ve ever heard! >x<

Among all the sounds above try to find a hedgehog.
I’m pretty sure that is what you hear. Few years back I had wild hedgehog coming by our garden every night at the same time and making the noise. I was feeding him whole summer. They do have quite loud voice.
