Hey everyone I’m new to this site and was hoping to get some insight from experienced rabbit owners. My rabbit Cornelius is 5, hes a Netherlands dwarf and about 2 weeks ago he started getting nose discharge. I took him in right away and a rabbit savvy vet checked his teeth and said she didn’t see anything but to truly know they would have to do an xray. In the meantime she prescibed baytril 0.5 ml twice a day. I don’t notice a significant difference, maybe a tiny bit but nothing major. His activity is the same and so is his appetite, he seems very happy and is his usual self. He also hasn’t sneezed, not once since getting the discharge. The discharge is not thick but is yellow to green colour and watery. It’s also not consistent. One moment he will barely have discharge for hours and then within 30 min to an hour he’ll have quite a bit where it even runs down the corners of his mouth. He’s also
Molting right now and I love Im Canada so spring has sprung and the weather is getting a bit warmer. Anyway let me know if you’ve had similar experiences or what I should do next. I really really appreciate it, I love him so much.

A yellow green discharge is indicative of bacteria, so antibiotics are needed. Baytril is generally first choice of abx with bunnies, but to truly know what antibiotics will be most effective, you need to do a culture to find out what bacteria are the culprits. But in any case, a prolonged course of abx is often needed. Do you have a follow up apt with your vet?

Teeth-roots growing up into the sinuses can be an issue with bunnies. Do you see any discharge from his eyes? (Often seen as wet cheeks or matted fur on the cheek).

No discharge from his eyes, just his nose mainly. I have a follow up at the end of two weeks with the baytril which will be this Saturday. I was reading about the bacteria culture, I wished they did that right of the bat instead of having to take him off the meds for 3 days to get an accurate reading. Not sure if this is informative information but I find the discharge happens a lot more when he’s eating hay rather than just resting. Anyway thank you for your response, really hoping I can get the discharge under control very soon.

I’ve been noticing all day now that the discharge is happening like crazy when he’s eating hay. Just wondering if anyone knows what that could mean as I can’t see the doctor until Wednesday of next week. It would be much appreciated for your advice and answers

Eating hay creates movement. I think that’s why it gets the discharge flowing. It’s good though. It should come out.

If he had terrible tooth pain I’d think he’d avoid hay. Hay is tough and requires a lot of chewing, so buns with dental issues tend to avoid hay.

The most commonly causative bacteria (pasteurella, bordetella) in cases of nasal discharge are sensitive to baytril, so that’s why they practically always start out with that. Pasteurella is a bacteria that’s practically always present in the nasal cavities of a bunny, it only causes trouble in some buns, but a culture showing pasteurella doesn’t necessarily mean the bunny is sick.

These things can need quite some time on antibiotics. The bacteria lurk deep in the sinuses and it’s hard for abx to penetrate the thick mucus. (That’s why it’s good to get it flowing). Sometimes abx-injections are more effective.

Hey I just wanted to update, after two weeks and a bit the vet took him off the baytril but it came back so now we’re on a two month course of it, I’m on week 2 and a half and it is better than when I took him back in, but the discharge is still there. Less green and more yellow and watery. He’s as happy as ever though and the important thing is that hes comfortable and happy. I’ve been cleaning the cage a few times a day to keep the dust down. we did do dental X-rays and a bacteria culture test. Xrays were normal but he did have 3 strains of bacteria in there that we’re all sensitive to baytril. This is happened twice so I don’t know if it’s a coincidence but both times that I took him for a vet outing his symptoms improved the next day. It got me thinking if it was something in my house that was affecting him. I have a little black mold on my windows, I’m going to clean it tomorrow with vinagar. I bought him a new hutch during the last time I posted as well. I really want to get him well so I’m going to go the extra mile. Thank you for all your help and advice, it meant a lot to me.

I’m glad your bun has improved some. I don’t really have a lot of advice to give. Just a caution to make sure to watch his poops and appetite during a long course of antibiotics like that. Some bunnies can have tummy issues.

Mold can affect bunnies but not sure how much a small amount like that would.

Wishing your bun a ((((Speedy Recovery)))))
