I started using wood pellet litter as it was recommended to me because I was complaining about odor.  Yes, it does a better job controlling odor, HOWEVER I hate it because it turns to dust and my bunny intentionally kicks it out everywhere!!!! She’s making such a huge mess.  She did this when I was using a straw litter that turned to dust, too, which is why I had gone back to paper pellet litter after that (before trying the wood pellets).  The paper pellet litter is nice because it stays in pellet form and stays in the litter box, but it does nothing to control odor.

I think I’ve probably tried every type of litter except walnut litter. (I even tried corn litter, which smelled terrible.)  There was some reason I was thinking walnut litter would not be good for my bunny….is there a reason I should or should not use this?  I feel like I had read that it’s dangerous or something, but now I can’t remember.

Here’s a picture of the lovely mess she keeps making.

        Thanks!

        Kristen

I’m not sure if walnut litter is safe for rabbits or not. On the printout we have at the Sanctuary where I volunteer, walnut litter is not on the unsafe or the safe list – it isn’t mentioned at all. I believe that I have read it is dangerous for reptiles, but I haven’t read anything about it regarding rabbits.

It sounds like you need to use a litter box screen so that your rabbit can’t dig out the litter and make a mess. They are sold in the Binky Bunny store, either by themselves or with a box. They are sold out right now, but you can get on a notification list.

They are probably sold in other places too. I think I’ve read some forums here where people made their own screens. You could try doing a search for those threads.

Oh, thank you that’s very helpful.  I’ve used paper pellet litter most of the time I’ve had her, so I haven’t needed one of those.  I wasn’t familiar with the finer screens, just the thicker wire grates that seem uncomfortable.  I think I will have to buy one.
