        Hi Guys,

Muffin is booked in to get spayed on Friday! I have no idea how to look after her when shes home! I am going to spend the day disinfecting her cage and everything in it and have it all clean for her coming home but i read somewhere not to have any sawdust or hay down as it can irritate the wound? I’m wondering if it would be worth while getting her a vetBed? How long should be let her rest before letting her out to run about? I’m so worried!! The past month or so she has been peeing & pooping everywhere when she gets out in the room, we basically have to follow her around the room with a brush and shovel and wipes.. will getting her spayed help this? can anyone recommend anything to make her comfy? i dont want her to hurt herself

I have vet beds for my buns, but a young bun might be inclined to pee on soft materials. You could use fleece instead of bedding after her spay, I buy the cheapest fleece blankies and cut them to size, they’re easy to wash and they don’t have threads so it’s pretty safe for a bun to have a nibble.
In the litter box you can use torn up newspaper instead of bedding.
The most important things for a newly spayed bun is food and being kept warm. A hot water bottle or a snuggle safe is good to have. Bunnies just out of surgery have a tendency to get hypothermic, and that’s dangerous.
Get a variety of her favorite foods so you can entice her to start eating asap. Cilantro, parsley, mint and other fragrant herbs are often appreciated.
Give her water in an open bowl and place it near her. And keep an eye.

You might want to get some Critical Care (if you can find some) in case you need to force feed her. Some girls are unwilling to eat on their own.

Make sure to check her incision every day for swelling, redness or bleeding.

Be prepared for a bunny who will be sleepy and feeling poorly for a couple of days. Make sure the vet sends her home with some pain meds.

Thank you Bam. Should i cover all of the cage floor with a fleece? i’m going to order her a snuggle safe just now! I’m planning on stocking up on her favorite herbs and greens before the big day! You would think it was me going for an op! Thanks LittlePuffyTail, i don’t think she will have any problems eating again, she is a grubber! I don’t think she gets any meds home with her but we do have an appt for the next day to check how she’s getting on. LittlePuffyTail, Where did you get your buns blankets? Adorable!!!

You can line the whole cage with fleece if she’s used to having bedding.

Critical Care is still a good idea, even the most food-loving bun can feel so out of it after surgery that you have to syringe feed. In a pinch you can use normal pellets soaked in water though.

It’s great that she has an apt the next day. Then they can assess her pain-level and if she needs motility drugs or subQ fluids they’ll give her that.

                  Thanks.

I got the blankies at the local dollar store. Many years ago, when I still had 3 buns. They are baby burping cloths and made for very cute pictures.
