So my bun has sore hocks. There was a huge scab on her heel. I mean to where the scab hadn’t fallen off and was still lingering and matted in her fur. And I was slightly pulling at it to see if it was lose and it looked loose. So I started taking it off slowly and gently. Some of it was still attached to her skin. At that point I didn’t know what to do. And I was gonna slightly try to get it off but I felt so bad…. But she ended up escaping out of my arms and when I got her back it was gone. Well there was a bunch of sleeping. And I feel bad. But I honestly feel it needed to be removed anyway. I looked at the matt of fur and scab and saw that maybe only 30 percent of the scab was attached to the skin. So I put neosprin on it and wrapped it up in gauze. Is this the bad thing to do?

Does she need to go to the vet or can I monitor it? I am so broke right now and cannot afford a vet trip. :'( not to be selfish, or terrible. Tomorrow I will buy some more gauze.

Am I a terrible and cruel person because I took The scab off? I feel like I am. I told my friend about it and I worry she thinks I am and she hasn’t replied to me but she us online and replied to something else I said so I am worried I frustrated her and did something I shouldn’t have. And so my anxiety is so bad and I feel like a terrible person. I just felt like it needed to come off. If it was completely attached then I would have not taken it off as that would be Mean

I think that’s a good thing to do. Just make sure you use the neosporin that doesn’t have pain meds in it. Another cream that can be used for hock sores silver sulfadiazine cream. It may be a little pricey but you don’t use it long term, just to speed up healing at first, then use another cream the rest of the time. So a tube should last a long time.
I read not too long ago that wrapping the hock is good. This was from reported by someone that attended a seminar given by a rabbit vet. You could even put an infant sock over the gauze so she can’t pull it off too easily. If me, I’d cut off the toe part of a sock so their nails are still free. I think they’d be less bothered by it that way.

Make sure you keep your bunnies nails trimmed short. This can help prevent sores from forming. Some rabbits are just prone to getting them though, unfortunately.

Try not to worry about this too much. She might not know one way or the other so didn’t say.

            Thank you so much!!!!!!

I will pick up a baby sock tomorrow. She actually doesn’t mind the gauze. I tried my best to not wrap it too tight.

The Neosporin is a generic and doesn’t have the pain med in it.

Is it good to put a baby sock over her other foot too? It’s also sore.
But there is no open wound or scab on it.

Should I bring her into the vet when I can or is it okay to treat it myself and see how it goes?

            Thank you again

How bad is her hock? Is it like an open wound, bleeding and/or oozing? If its’ at that point, I would really recommend a vet visit. When my Olivia had an open spot on her hock, my vet put her on oral antibiotics as a precaution. If bacteria gets in there, it can abscess which can be very difficult to treat. My vet also gave me chlorhexidine scrub to wash her feet.

What is her flooring like? You need to remove the cause of the sore hocks. What worked wonders for my girl was good quality memory foam bath mats. I bought some at Bed Bath & Beyond and they really helped.

My rabbits (first one and now two) have never had the sore hock problem.  Their pen is lined with a throw rug(s).  Outside of the pen, we have mostly hardwood floors with throw rugs and a few carpet squares here and there.  They don’t like to hop on the hardwood floors since it’s slippery so with strategically placed throw rugs and carpet squares they can travel about the house.   When they were younger and un-neutered, they tended to mark, so we’d occasionally wash a throw rug.  Because of chewing, for throw rug material I think it’s best to buy cotton, and second best is probably wool, with polyester the worst.  Being older and neutered, their chewing problem has greatly diminished.

Hey so sorry I haven’t replied.

She does have the open sore but only because I peeled that scab off but it is healing. No oozing and no sign of infection. The whole area is very red though.
I.have been putting Neosporin on this spot and changing her gauze every day. Then the the foot I have been putting calendula on it. And there are no sores on this foot… however last night I was really looking through her hair on her feet. Saw some sort like color.. well turns out it was a scab that was matted in her fur. I mean it was so hard to tell it was their anyway. Well spelled peeled it off. It only took off the hair that had grown underneath it but there was no.open sores.

Also her tail feels weird too. It is lumpy and you can see the actual lumps if you look through her fur. And the base of her tail is super dry. She has also.having some skin flaking issues throughout her body too. Well for the last few months but only in very small amounts.

My friend who is very experienced with bunnies is gonna take a look at her feet and tail tomorrow nd see if we should take my bun to the vet or wait.

Her bedding is a fleece blanket. Before when I was inexperienced and didn’t know… It was mostly my carpet. :'( I had a blanket for her but she only used it sometimes. So fml.

I will take her to the vet if I need to for sure. Hopefully she will be ok. She has been such a trooper with letting me change her bandages and put calendula on her tush. Poor girl

                  Thank you so much <3

Hey so Luna is going to the vet Saturday. The lumps on her tail are actually scabs. And I found some mini scabs on her back with some little amounts of dandruff and then there’s some dandruff by the side near one one of her eyes. But her tail is really bad scab wise. I honestly feel like most of her tail is a scab and wants to come off. It looks bad. But I didn’t pull any of the scabs off. One is hanging slightly off … It’s still attached but some of it has detached itself. But I left it alone.

Could it be a bad infestation with fur mites? They often attack at the base of the tail and between the shoulder-blades. They often don’t cause itching, so no itching doesn’t mean there aren’t mites. They cause dandruff and scabs. Here’s some info:

                        fur mites rabbit

Rabbits can carry mites in small numbers, then something suddenly makes them start to multiply. It’s very common and it’s preferably treated with Revolution (selamectin) or Ivermectin. Both those meds are very effective against cheyletiella mites, but repeat treatment (once or twice) is often needed.

                          Sorry I hadn’t replied yet.

I actually was thinking it was mites or a fungal infection. She doesn’t itch. Also I saw her mails need to be clipped BUT she has the issue on her tail so that’s obviously not from sharp nails. And my friend said she thinks that it has to do with Luna not being able to reach her tail to groom so to cut down her pellets as I give her too much.

Her tail is bad though. When I was looking at it yesterday I seriously feel like all the fur is gonna peel off due to scabs. And the color of the hair is like a weird grey color at the base of her tail but the had is weird and course. Idk how to explain it but it doesn’t look normal.
She is always grooming herself. And actually I take back that I don’t see her itch. I actually do see her itch, like right now. But I would get confused on if she was itching or grooming.

Also maybe she is allergic to the detergent I use. (For her blankets she has as bedding)

Idk. This is just bad. She is going in on Saturday. And she also has hair loss on her back and you can tell. It started happening at the beginning of January. And I believe I told a vet that but they didn’t seem concerned.

The fur falls out when there’s a bad fur mite infestation. It will of course grow back when the problem is fixed. Mites also cause the skin to produce more sebum (fat, tallow), that could change the texture and color of the fur. It’s very typical of mites to occur where the bunny can’t groom herself (tail, nape of neck).

I’m glad she’s going to the vet. Sending her so many vibes (((((Luna))))) and hugs for you!
