So, some of you may remember I have a week off in May (9th) with no plans of where to go

I STILL don’t and today is pretty much the last Saturday I have to plan them.  Oops

I will already be in London on the 8th (London Pet Shoooooooooowww!) and so will drop cat and wabbit (and 10 tons of cages, barriers, rugs, food and toys!) off at their 5 star hotel (my parents’ house!) and so can leave from Gatwick safe in the knowledge furry children are cared for.

As I’ll already be in UK, I would love to go on a walking week in UK: Lake District, Peak District, Coastal walks Devon, Wales…

But, I’d prefer to wait to see what weather will do (it’s a bit strange at the moment, hot then cold, v dry then vvv wet!!). I don’t really fancy trudging through a week in the mud).

My downer on this idea is YOU NEED A DOG to go walking !!! Especially on one’s own… and I miss my 4-legged companion so much. She came walking with me on every holiday, this will just make the gaping space she’s left so much more.. empty.  I’ve thought of borrowing one….

The other idea is to return to walking heaven in the sun (Kyra never flew with me…  ) La Gomera, a wonderful WONDERFUL secret (not that secret) island (away from the tourists!!!) just off Tenerife. (or Ten-er-reef-eh? as the Brits say…; lol) which I discovered 2 years ago.

Again I’m not a “suitcase traveller”, I take backpack and go to remote parts… again, alone is not my idea of fun, though I do it.

I’ve looked on a travel-buddy website and noone is going that way….

So come on, please give me some ideas, motivation or encouragement, because i’ve been sitting in front of my computer looking for a couple of hours and am no further ahead.

So i am going to act in a very British way when things are not going as planned… I’m going to make a cup of tea….

Also, calling photographers out there – I will be packing light (hah!) but will be taking my D5200 with me.
I already have a 18-105 lens, but would like to know if you had a preference would YOU buy a 50mm or a micro lens to go on a walking hol with….?

La Gomera! My brother discovered that island just this February. He wants to go live there.

The weather is more stable there than in Britain, that is a huge plus. You never know with northern Europe. Glorious sunshine and beautiful scenery or rain and mud. Mud mud mud. Rain. More mud.

I don’t know anything about cameras at all. I wish I did. It seems crazy complicated.

If it were me, I’d be taking my 100-400, how else will you take pictures of distant wildlife Haha. But out of that, you already essentially have the 50mm in your 18-105, so a micro lens would offer more versatility in that regard.

It all sounds very exciting though, I’ve always wanted to go on a walking holiday. Also I’m quite jealous about the London Pet Show, make sure you take lots of pictures

Ah now then Azerane – don’t get me started on a 100-400 ! I’m sooo tempted too…… but I’d need a trolley to carry it all on – and I’m not a particularly good wildlife photographer ( no change that to just photographer ! LOL)

Twas Q8 who sold me on the idea on a 50mm fixed lens…. (I’ve already forgotten what her tips were on buying on (apart from the “‘most expensive one you can afford” LOL)

Bam – Yes La Gomera is a banana plantation heaven, tropical feeling with warm sun and sea !! Great for holidays but it is a small island culture and apparently there is quite a high alcohol consumption with the locals… and TRUST me, you do not want to get in a car with the sheer drops on the tiny cliff roads there are there !!!

I’m still undecided… I’ve moved on to walking around the Isle of Wight (or the “Isle of Alka Seltzer” as its also fondly known as it’s shrinking in size each year from all sides)…

Oooo just come across a telephoto lens 420-800mm for £80…. down from £240.
Good comments – but manual focus and settings only….

I’ve told myself I must earn a lens like that so I have to learn more about how to use my camera (off ‘auto’) beforehand….
I’ll have lots of scrummy practice at the Pet Show !

Even at 240 that’s still quite cheap for a lens like that, not sure how good the quality would be at the long end. Plus the manual focus would be quite tough.

I was really tough on myself when I first got my DSLR, from the moment I took it out of the box I told myself I wasn’t allowed to use it on Auto, and I don’t recall ever having done so except when I’m handing it to other people to take a picture of me or something like that. It was a very sharp learning curve, but it really makes you learn. Even now though I know I’m not using it to it’s full capacity, but at leas I do know how to use it manually.

Oh wow – that must have been fun to start with – all non-auto – I usually try and then give up… grrrr.
I had bellyaching laughs with my parents (and unknown onlookers) the other day as I gave the Nikon to Mum to take a picture of me & Dad.
For some reason she just couldn’t hold it properly – I was convinced they had a ‘nice’ camera when I was younger – apparently Mum never used it !!!!
She was holding underneath the lens with her right hand and then couldn’t work out how to press the shutter button which is of course also on the right. The onlookers were being polite and not laughing during my patient explanations to poor Mum, but when I cracked up, so did they !!

The comments on the telephoto lens have been quite positive. Check out the 4 photos on the commentary from John K The “same” photo at 55mm through to 800mm.

Fussy buyers will say its not high quality – but an intelligent buyer said it was very good for the price – you pay for what you get. Indeed.

Anyone thinking of home waterproofing walking shoes with beeswax and linseed oïl…..??

Here are the results in photos… (with help from Zou of course!)

For info – the beeswax remelted into the fabric with the help of a hairdryer and lots of rubbing… and the shoes have a ‘normal’ look again, just a bit darker…
