        Hello all,

So we got our first rabbit at the end of September and everything has been going fine.

Jade never used to grunt and is still a very happy bunny but whenever we give her food she starts to grunt. While your holdng the pellets/any other food and try to put it in her cage she grunts at you. Is this aggression or just excitement that the food is coming. She loves her food so maybe she’s just happy that she’s getting a snack but it only happens while she is in the cage as this afternoon I was giving her a bit of cauliflower stalk and she came out of the cage to eat it from my hands.

She can be a little bit bossy but has never grunted at us like this.

Should I be worried or not?

How old is your girl and is she spayed?

My little girl (who recently went to the Bridge) always grunted at me when I put the bowl in her condo. Sometimes I’d even get pummeled. I think it’s mostly a territorial thing.

Jade is just over 1 years old and is spayed.

Haha, I am very familiar with this, as well as being pummelled by a grunting rabbit during feeding time, like LittlePuffyTail expressed. Oftentimes, familiar sounds or routines will be enough to flip a switch in my rabbit’s brain. In dogs, excitement can easily morph into aggression, but I am not sure about bunnies.

Unless she’s actually biting you (which can happen in a food frenzy – think Vampires and Twilight and all that :p), it’s nothing to worry about, in my opinion. Bossiness is a common experience for me. Thor (neutered) grunts when he’s hungry, annoyed, excited, impatient (it all depends on what’s going on at the time). I used to worry that Crysta would get hurt when Thor chased her away for first dibs at meal times, but after the initial scuffle, he settles down and eats with her politely – it’s just that he wants it first, which creates that excitement and possessiveness.

Oh OK thanks, she hasn’t bitten us so I guess that’s a good sign but is there any way to stop her from doing this behaviour? If it’s not possible to stop her and it’s just because she’s excited for her breakfast then I’m OK with it.

My bun grunts when I invade his space. Particularly in the morning when I go to pet him and he’s just waking up. I think it’s cute when he’s grumpy haha

Haha, well I guess it’s nothing to worry about!

                    Thanks for answering!
