I hope I’m posting this in the right category.. But my girl bunny named Lola I’ve noticed when I picked her up she had bleeding.. down there.. Should I take her to the vet? My vet isn’t in today and I want to know if I should be worried or not.. I just noticed she had bleeding a couple minutes ago.

        Thanks.

If she is bleeding, and it’s a lot, she must see a vet. Have you seen blod before from her? Rabbits can have very red pee, but it wouldn’t feel or smell like blood. We recently heard about another bunny who bled down there, from a uterus infection. Here’s that bunny-owner’s story, it ends well but it might not have.

Its not a lot, very little. I’ve never seen the blood there before either. I first looked at it and was very shocked to see it. I only picked her up to start brushing her like I normally do and I noticed..

I just called the vet and the bunny vet wasn’t in today but another vet said it could be many things- most which should not be serious. She said she could have had diarhea or not be cleaning herself good enough and got an infection if she did not clean up all the way. Which will usually go away on its own; if it was infected, swollen  and filled w/ puss, then she may need an antibiotic or a good cleaning down there. She also said it might also have to do with the scent glands down there that could be clogged and would need to be cleaned.

She said unless the rabbit is always sleeping and not eating or drinking water not to worry & whatever it is should go away on its own.

So in conclusion it was good that you told me to call the vet! It was nice she told me this information. I was so worried reading other articles saying that it could be disease or something..

Thank you for your help.. I also read the other article as well.

I’m glad you called the vet, but if you see more blood, you should contact your own vet and make an appointment. Blood can be a sign of sth wrong with her internal lady-parts (uterus, ovaries), if she isn’t spayed. Diseases in that area are unfortunately common in intact girl buns. It is really best for her health if you can get her spayed, we always recommend owners of girl buns to get them spayed if it is possible (it isn’t in all parts of the world.)

Your vet can tell if sth is wrong via a urinary sample. I don’t mean to scare you here, but keep a close eye, both on her private area and on her appetite, energy level etc.

You can clean her scent glands with a q-tip dipped in oil or water, here’s a nice little video on how to do that:

We’d be very happy for updates

Youll want to go to your rabbit vet for many of those issues.. If its an infection, she needs antibiotics. If her glands need cleaning, she needs to have them cleaned. If shes not cleaning herself well enough, the vet needs to exam and figure out why. These are things that require a rabbit savvy vet visit, the sooner the better

I agree with Mikey. I think it would be a good idea to have her in to see the “rabbit-savvy” vet as blood down there, (if it is blood and not red pee, is not something that should be ignored. The other vet gave you decent advice as far as it being an emergency or not, but I know my rabbit-savvy vet would definitely think it is something that should be seen as a UTI will not go away on its own, and there are other reasons that blood in that region could be more serious. I definitely am not trying to alarm you, as an infection can be easily treated by a vet, but in my opinion, it’s something that should be seen by the “rabbit-savvy” vet you originally tried to contact.

Keep us updated. Hope all is well.

I agree with the others. There are too many possibilities that would NOT go away on their own. Blood down there is a symptom of something being wrong in her uterus, which is actually pretty common in intact females. Even if it was a UTI or something, she would still need antibiotics. The vet you spoke to is probably right. As long as she is eating/pooping, it isn’t an emergency. But she does need to see the vet soon. So try to get her in to see the more rabbit savvy vet.

Thank you guys very much for all the advice, I will keep you guys updated. I know it is very scary. I don’t even want to scare myself. I will be calling the vet again tomorrow, sadly the bunny vet is only there on certain days and I keep missing her. My bunny is only 15 weeks old. So I can’t get her spayed yet sadly.

EDIT- I almost double posted on accident! I saw the edit button though lol! But I just picked her up and turned her over, the blood is all gone and I don’t see anything, like I said before there was hardly nothing there very little when I first saw it. I picked her up just to see and its gone,  I don’t see blood anywhere in the cage or on her or by her body parts. I am still going to call the vet just in case!

bobbielop — sounds like a good plan. Glad you haven’t seen any further blood, but it’s good to check with your vet, so I am so glad to hear you are still going to do that. Keep us udpated.
