        Hi, everyone!

This is my first time posting here, but I’ve read through a lot of your forums before and you guys are really helpful.

Okay, to start, my baby Finn has always had pretty much perfect litter habits other than right before I got him fixed (unless he’s in bed with me). He’s been fixed for about three years now. In the last three months or so, I started finding pee underneath his litter box when I went to clean it and this became a regular thing. Strange, but not a HUGE deal. Then in the last six weeks, however, he started just blatantly peeing all over in his cage. I always happen to hear him pee, so that often means me getting out of bed to clean it up. I can’t just let him sit there! Meanwhile, he has been acting normal, eating ferociously, and pooping well. But it started to get to the point where I was getting concerned, so I took him to the vet about three weeks ago. They did everything: physical exam, urinalysis, blood work, and radiographs. Couldn’t find anything. They said it’s most likely behavioral but they had me tweak his diet a little bit.

After the vet, nothing really improved until I introduced a second litterbox into his cage. Everything after that was perfect for about a week. Then it started again. And NOW he’s peeing on the carpet, which he has NEVER done in his life. Still acting like my normal Finn. He now has one GIGANTIC litterbox with sides probably six inches high in his cage. I’ve been trying to retrain this entire time by putting soiled paper towels in his litterbox. But the thing is, he’s using it, just not al of the time. I think he might be mad about something, but nothing has really changed for him in this time.

Sorry, this is long, but it’s been a long several weeks. Do you guys have any suggestions for retraining? At this point, I feel like I don’t know what to do besides clean up pee for the rest of our time together.

        Thanks!

My only suggestion since you seem to have tried everything else already, is to confine him to his cage for a time (whether it’s a few days or a week). He obviously won’t be happy about it, but if you can keep him to his cage and get his litter habits perfect in there, then you can slowly start expanding his space again. Add an exercise pen onto the front of his cage for a bit of added space and if he retains good litter habits with the added space for a few days, then expand the space again and so on. It could be a long process but it should do the trick.

My other thought was that it might have been to do with random spring time hormones (if you’re in the northern hemisphere) as a lot of people seem to be having funny behaviours from their bunnies this spring, however six weeks is a long time for that behaviour to persist.

            Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, the vet said it might be a seasonal thing too, as weird as that sounds. And we do live in Michigan. I’ve been trying to avoid keeping him caged because I feel bad but I guess that’s where we’re at now.

I should also note that he has now started to poop wayyyy more outside of his cage then he normally does. Like in large piles. And also that he will literally just hop out of his cage specifically to pee right next to it. He’s being very difficult, but he’s too cute for me to be actually mad at!

            Thank you!
