I took my rabbit Bolbi to get neutered last thursday. I was checking his incision areas today when I noticed in one of the residual “sacks” that there was a hard and large lump at the end of it that could be rolled around. The other sack was completely limp and empty. Is it possible the veterinarian accidentally did not get all the teste out? I’m not sure what to do as I can’t really afford another neuter and feel if this is the case they should do something about it. But other than the vet accidentally leaving some teste still in the sack I just don’t know what it could be. what should i do? is this something that has happened before? this was a new vet straight out of vet school who did this neuter.

            Hi!
It is actually quite unlikely that the vet left anything, unless the vet was completely careless. Let us take a look at how a neuter is preformed!

An incision is made on the testicle, and the vet gently squeezes the sack out before pulling it up and finding the blood vessel. They make a hold of sorts and then tie the blood vessel off, then snipping it away, leaving only a string of flesh. So it’s quite unlikely to be what you are suggesting! It could be though (: I would take him to the vet to get it checked out. Best of luck!

I can’t imagine a vet would make an incision and then not remove the testicle. What you’re describing does sound worrisome though. It doesn’t sound like normal “swelling”. It could be an abscess or it could be something else. Either way, it’s best to have the vet take a look. Many vets won’t charge a full visit fee if the patient is being seen for the same thing. My vet does this. If it is a follow-up type visit, they only charge half the office visit fee.

I just felt maybe she had not gotten everything out, or something. But yea, could be an abscess. Not sure though because there is no discharge redness or swelling of the testicle itself, that’s why I hadn’t noticed it before til I palpated it. I’ve read that sometimes blood can get into the teste and solidify? Not sure. but anyways I emailed my vet to see what I should do.. any other advice/replies are appreciated! thank u guys

Abscesses can become encapsulated, so there may not be any outward signs of infection yet. I suppose if the testicle was abnormal, then the vet may have missed some. That would be very rare though. I mean, Wooly had an undescended testicle. The vet was confused momentarily when she found a fatty deposit where one of his testicles should have been. But she knew it wasn’t a testicle and proceeded to search his abdomen for it. She made sure she got it. If the vet was knowingly unsuccessful though, they would have told you.

Oh ok, I hope it is not an abscess because I thought he was healing so nicely! No vets are open on Sundays so I will be calling Monday if she doesn’t get back to me sooner. But looks like I probably have to bring him in. I really was hoping to hear from others who have had the same experience but looks like it doesnt happen much

It could also be a hernia. The testes come down the inguinal canal and we know rabbits can pull them back up into their abdomen. In the same way, part of the intestines can come through this canal if the method of closing it off has failed. So it’s called an inguinal hernia.

Hopefully the vets can sort it out for you and no extra cost!.

Oh no I hope it’s not a hernia! It’s quite firm and at the bottom of the sack so I’m hoping that’s not the case.. I truly do not know what it could be though as it seems nobody has had this problem so now I’m so worried

This is going to seem like a dumb question, but I will pose it nonetheless. Was this a rabbit vet who performed the neuter? I was told by a reliable source that there was a regular vet who incised a male rabbit as if it were a female. I think the rabbit ended up with 2 incisions. Don’t ask me how. I’ve also heard that sometimes testes can live further up in the body, a bit like what others mentioned, and a vet can miss it on occasion (it was suggested that Thor might have been extra hormonal because of an oversight during the procedure – performed by a canine vet prior to adoption). I’m the type of person who will get several opinions, so I suggest booking an appt. with a different exotics vet with more experience – either from the same practice, as a neuter follow-up to keep costs down, or from a different practice altogether.
