Peter went in to get his teeth clipped Saturday because of some points in his teeth. I noticed this because he had small decreased poops, some stretching of the stomach area, and he ate his food slower. I gave him a little bit of simethicone before I went to our nearby shelter for a second opinion, she said to go in to the vet and said I don’t have to continue the simethicone, so I don’t. Wednesday I notice weird poops again after he was doing much better and he felt a little cold, so I temp him and it was 99 .4. I call the vet and she said that I should have continued his simethicone, so now I should give him more till he feels completely better because she suspects that a gas bubble could have formed due to his teeth. She told me to warm him up and give him simethicone and if he’s not eating in the morning or if his temp isn’t better to bring him in. His temp was better and he was acting better so I did not go to the vet that morning (Thursday).
His poop has gotten so much better just a tiny tiny bit smaller than his average poops, he is eating his food now right when I give it to him and he eats his hay too. The only thing wrong is his temperature now. I warm him up to about 103 (I know he will regulate the temp anyways) but then two hours later he goes to 100. Do I need to be worried, his energy is up like usual, no more funny stretches, I give him simethicone still now too every 4-5 hours. I just don’t know if this still him trying to get healthy? Thoughts anyone? I have a lot of body temperature data from him the past two days if anyone want to see that if it helps. Oh and he is also molting right now too, could that have anything to do with it. His fur is a lot less dense.

Do you know what his temp was at normal times? He might just run a little cooler then the norm. I think 100F is okay. He might need some more
There’s a little bit about Temperature in this article. http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sickbun.html

Did the vet give your rabbit a shot of pain relief medication before he was sent home?
I’m a little surprised that on the Wednesday they only told you to give simethicone.
If Peter needs more dental trims in future, ask if they’ll give you some oral pain meds to take home.

His normal temperature runs around 101. I know that he will need more trims in the future, before he got rescued he had a bad tooth infection that spread to his eye and they had to pull that tooth so now he has 3 insisors. I’ll ask about the oral pain meds next time I go.
Oh and do you know about how long I should continue the simethicone, till he’s 100 percent better? I just measured his temperature and it was 99.7.

              How is he acting?
Eating and drinking okay? I’m not sure it’s worth continuing with simethicone if he’s eating, drinking, toileting.

Yeah that’s the thing, everything is fine now except for his slightly lowered temp, his appetite has come back, he poops normally, at a good size, and he drinks pretty well too. He binkies, begs for treats, and cuddles like normal.

                  That’s good.

The low temp might have been a mis-reading perhaps? If thermometer is not
in correctly, you might get a lower reading. That’s the only thing I can think of.

You can continue the simethicone for a long time. It has no systemic effect, it acts locally in the GI tract and comes out with the poop, unchanged. I had to give my Yohio simethicone daily (on my vet’s order) for 4 weeks when he had dental issues (which took 3 weeks for my vet to diagnose, then 1 more week for him to recuperate from the dental burr.)

It does seem odd about his temp. Keep keeping an eye. Keep keeping him warm. Eating and binkying really ought to get his temp up (I break a sweat from even thinking about doing a binky). Molting often does affect a bunny though, it’s like their immune system get challenged. They can get stomach trouble, become really grumpy, get a fur-mite outbreak etc.

Are you quite confident there’s no lingering infection from when he had the tooth infection? Was it the incisors he had clipped this time?

It’s been 9 months since his infection, the vet said they clipped the incisors and a point on a molar. He has shown no other signs of pain or discomfort and any other tell signs of sickness prior to his teeth this time. He was the happiest bunny I knew, I’m so glad he’s getting back in the groove and to his old self again.
