Not sure whether to be happy or frightened about the whole situation. Toffee has had runny eyes and nose for weeks now, and after searching and searching for a rabbit-savvy vet, we’ve finally found one! We feel that he’s lonely and he may have chronic runny eyes, but in a couple of months we are getting him a spayed or neutered bonding partner. Sooo I’m excited/scared to see what’s going to happen with the visit!

So do you think it could be chronic runny eyes? Any tips on nervousness?

There are lots of causes for runny eyes and nose, some more serious than others but it’s impossible to know without a proper check up.

          Wishing you the best.

Unfortunately it seems to be something terrible… Snuffles.

Such an innocent name for such a terrible sickness.

How did the vet diagnose this and what is the treatment?

He just listened to his breathing and looked at his face and immediately said “He has snuffles, which is a respiratory infection.” We have to give him injections.

Apparently the bacteria that causes bunny snuffles is commonly present in their respiratory track, but their immune system keeps the bacteria in check.   Our rabbit developed snuffles when she was about 9 or 10 years old.  The immune system in older rabbits is not that robust.  She was prescribed antibiotics.   It took one or two refills of the antibiotic, but her snuffles went away.

As flemishwhite says, snuffles can be cured. It’s often caused by pasteurella, a type of bacteria that is normally present in most, if not all, bunnies’ nasal cavities. Most buns don’t get sick from pasteurella, but some do, not necessarily just older buns. It’s not known why some get sick, others live their whole lives without ever getting snufffles. But it’s still very true that the immune defense is not as good in the very young and in the elderly as it is in young adults.

There are other bacteria that can cause snuffles too, f ex bordetella. Pasteurella and bordetella are both sensitive to enrofloxacine (Baytril). Injections can have a more powerful effect than oral abx, plus they don’t disturb the sensitive gastro intestinal flora quite as much as oral abx do.

Please keep us updated. Many vibes for (((((Toffee)))))
