Starlight managed to get into a box of dots last night. I called the vet and was told she would be fine until the morning. I made the mistake of trusting her word and was going to wait until morning before going to see her, trusting my vets word for her safety. When I got out of bed this morning she was stiff. Her little bunny eyes were still open. I can;t believe I trusted that womens word! I thought she would be fine. I can’t help but blame myself. I should have taken her to the vet last night, the instant I woke up to hear her rummaging. I should have done something to make sure she was fine before going to sleep.

I feel so awful, and I can’t stop crying. I loved her so much. She was the perfect bunny and now I never get to see her binky again. Sorry, this is emotional. I only had her two weeks, which makes it much worse. I guess I wasn’t cut out to be a bunny owner.

Rest in Peace, sweetheart. Know I always loved you.

I’m so very sorry to hear this. You are NOT a bad bunny owner. You called your vet for advice, that’s what a good bunny owner does. Many bunnies get into stuff they shouldn’t, most come out fine. There might well have been sth else underneath, sth you couldn’t have known about. My Yohio stole a bag of jellybeans once. We had another bunny here recently who got into a bag of chewing gum and developped a blockage, that’s really bad, but the bunny pulled through.

Don’t blame yourself. Your intentions wer all good. You opened your heart and home to her, put her on a better diet and you loved her. Rabbits can be very delicate. You said in your first post that you got her from someone who wasn’t treating her right. She could have had an underlying condition from long term bad diet/treatment.

I think you really are cut out to be a bunny owner. Because you care, you have a loving heart and good sense. You did call a vet and you followed the vets advice. That’s why there are vets, because pet-owners can’t know everything. If we did, there wouldn’t be vets. We have to consult with experts. And we are supposed to be able to trust them. I’m not sure your vet gave you bad advice, even if the outcome of course was terrible. Fruit dots are not toxic or anything, they don’t even have gelatine.

Please be kind to yourself now.

          Binky free, sweet Starlight

This breaks my heart. I’m so sorry for your loss. I also agree with everything Bam said – you sound like a loving and concerned rabbit parent, and you shouldn’t put yourself down. We do the best we can, but at times our companions’ lives are out of our hands. It’s scary and saddening, but not your fault. I hope you adopt a rabbit again someday.

I agree with Bam, there may have been something else going on that you had no way of knowing about.
