We recently got our male bun neutered and he’s been bouncing back pretty well. However, to keep him from licking or beotching at stitches, the vet put a yoke-cast around his neck. However, tonight he’s been getting his paws stuck in it, we’re assuming from trying to leverage it off.

The problem is, he has to keep the yoke on for 5 more days and we’re really, really worried he’ll do it again when we’re not around, since he’s done it more than once now. Is there a way to discourage it or just keep an eye on him until we get a chance to call vet about it?

Most boys won’t lick or bite at their incision area if they have gotten sufficient pain-meds. In some places, bun’s don’t get pain meds after a neuter though. It would be sth to ask your vet about. Metacam (meloxicam) for kittens is a bunny-safe pain-killer.

You could take the E-collar off and watch him, see if he goes for the area. Bunnies generally hate E-collars, so they should be used sparingly and they are mostly used when you have seen that the bun actually is obsessing over his wound.

5 days with a collar after a neuter seems a bit like over-kill to me, most boys bounce back like nothing even happened within 48 hours. But that’d have to be your vets call.

            I agree with Bam 100%.

There have been incidents where some bunnies have bothered with their stitches, but it’s not common. And the cone can cause more stress during healing, especially since males do bounce back more quickly.

(Cute avatar and name by the way!)

Thanks for the responses. The bun’s been on pain meds and been bouncing back fairly well, which is another reason we think he might be in ‘get this OFF’ mode.

His yoke’s on pretty pretty securely so, at this point, we’re leaning towards pulling an allnighter and calling vet first thing in the morning. Will ask about the five day, for sure.

              (@ BB: Thanks ^^)

The “get it OFF”-mode is a sign of him bouncing back, so that’s great! And it’s great that he is getting pain-meds, it helps them heal faster (less stress on the system, pain is very stressful). In some countries vets don’t give painkillers though for fear it’ll cause the bun to not take it easy and rest after the surgery. That view is rather outdated though, luckily.
