Last week my girlfriend and I found a Craigslist add for a rabbit. The guy with the rabbit wouldn’t look us in the eye, wouldn’t let us see where she lived or pick her up out of the cardboard box. He even gave use his neighbors address. We felt the deal was a bit off but loved the rabbit so we decided to bring her home regardless. She is an absolutely sweet albino rabbit but is a bit timid to us. We know she’ll come around to us in good time, however, we are having a lot of issues with litter training.
She came with a plastic corner tray, a bag of aspen shavings, and corn based pellets. We replaced her pellets with alfalfa pellets and Timothy hay. We’ve also given her beet tops and carrots. Also we’ve ditched the aspen shavings for care fresh paper litter. We moved her from the tiny cage she had to our old dogs kennel with a cardboard box house for hiding. However, the litter box remains the same.
The bulk of her droppings make it into the litter box but she seems to spread random pellets across the house when we let her out. The pellets aren’t as bad as the urine. I’m not sure how to correct this litter issue. We don’t like keeping her in the cage but when we give her free reign she goes everywhere. What can we do to solve this? This is our first rabbit.

Thank you for taking her in! And thank you for giving her a bigger cage =) They do like space!

It’s very difficult to litter train an intact rabbit. Look into getting her spayed, it will help with litter box habits plus stop the risk of her getting cancer or other diseases of the reproductive organs.
You can have more than one litter-box, preferably several, to begin with. Corner litter boxes are practically always way too small for a bunny’s liking. Rabbits like bigger boxes, I have cat boxes, 18 x 13 inches. Place the litterboxes where she’s done her business – rabbits like to chose their toilet-spots themselves. Put poop and sth she’s peed on in each litter box. She’s probably marking her territory extra now because she’s new.

Until you get her spayed, you can try putting lots of fresh hay in her litter box to encourage her to spend time in there. Hay should be 80% of a rabbit’s diet anyways.
