ok so i got a baby rabbit from a Lady who had rabbits for sale, he was fine last night before i went to bed eating hopping throwing his toys around, this morning he is letting out high pitched squeeks and and convulsing. called the emergency vet, but they said theres nothing they can think of. he is tilting his head, but only when i rub his cheek. he moves around but if i try to pick him up he screams like it hurts. he hasnt been dropped and the only time he’s been out of his cage is when i hold and love on him and clean his cage out as we have dogs and cats who show interest in eating him (working on that with the dogs and cats). and his ears are hot, ive been rubbing cool water on them and got them down to warm, but i have no clue what else to do!

I’m surprised the emergency vet didn’t even want to try to do anything at all. I’m afraid I’m not sure what it could be, though it certainly sounds like he’s in pain. I would try to keep him confined for now and get him into your rabbit savvy vet as soon as they open, otherwise phone another emergency vet. He really needs to be seen ASAP. Wishing him all the very best, sorry I can’t help more.

Youll have to remove him from the cats and dogs vision for now. Put him in his own room so they arnt around. He sounds stressed. Screaming is a sign of high stress/fear, or pain. If its not pain, hes terrified. Stress and fear can kill a rabbit. Can you take him to a nonemergency vet? He needs to be seen by any rabbit savvy vet that you know is open and can make an appointment to within the next 24 hours

ok so i got the vet to come out and take a look at him, he took blood samples and will get the results to me tomorrow. the dogs are not allowed in my room which is where we keep him, and only one of our cats is allowed in as he’s an old cat and has never brought me anything dead.(mostly baby birds that fall out of the nest and are still alive he brings to me to raise) and i found him snuggled up with bugs and bugs grooming him. he is acting normal and eating and hopping around now, vet said its possible for a rabbit to have epilepsy ( so did not know that) and that based on what he’s seen he may have it. He’s been a complete stinker and nibbled on my fingers, but even if he is acting normal i know he might not be.  my other two cats are young cats so teaching them that bugs is not food, will be tough but i’ll get it through their thick skulls eventually, but my older cat has beena round rabbits and mice as pets and knows not to try ( he was my sisters cat before becoming mine) i keep a water bottle handy and if that doesnt work a swat on the butt does, anyways if he is an epileptic then i will begin a regime and monitor his food and seizures.

It is possible for them to have seizures and it can be managed somewhat with medication. Hopefully it was a one time thing for your bunny. How scary!

Baby rabbits can sometimes have nutritional deficiency but usually these will cause paralysis. 2 that *may* cause convulsions are magnesium deficiency or vitamin A overdose. Its not very common though. Hopefully the vet can get to the bottom of what is going on.

Years ago, a member here had a baby rabbit that had kidney stones! Poor thing had to pass them naturally. If you continue to see your rabbit in a bad way like this and bloods haven’t revealed anything, consider doing urine test and some other diagnostics like xray and/or ultrasound.

I sincerely hope it was a one time thing. Definitely not an experience I’d wish on anyone, especially bringing home a new pet.

OK so not epilepsy. At the vets now getting other tests done so far everything is normal no seizures this morning I did give him a grass clover and Rose petal mix I made last night and he acted like he was starved. Did the same thing this morning before going to the vets again he acted like he was starved. I threw in some danilions in the mix. I’m just wonder if it was something he did to himself he is very active. My vet said he needs to go outside for short periods because I took him outside yesterday with me on our porch while he was seizing and that seemed to help some it calmed him down

Glad to hear you’ve got a thorough check-up. Fingers crossed it won’t ever happen again.
