I adopted my first bun a week ago.  He is a 4 month old dwarf mix, fairly small.  Overall he’s been really good, but just yesterday I discovered he can jump up onto the bench tops in the kitchen where he’s kept (nearly 3ft high) from the floor.  So far he has just favoured one bench that has the fish tank on it and hasn’t tried to jump onto the actual kitchen benches, but they are the same height so I’m sure he will try soon. I tell him no and put him down on the floor straight away, but he’s very determined.  I’m also worried he will hurt himself trying to get back down.

The bench tops would be really difficult to bunny proof (food, dishes, cables, appliances etc)  and I don’t want his feet up there anyway – is there any way I can stop him?  I can’t really keep him in any other room (though he does have supervised access to some of them).

Do you have a exercise pen he could be in for the meantime? When they are young and lean, they can jump pretty well. Once they get more adult body form, they do this less, I’ve found. Still, he might always be agile. At his age, it’s not a bad idea to limit his free roaming space.

p.s. make sure bathroom door is closed and toilet seat down, if he’s curious jumper!

Not really – due to the placing of the benches and the shape/size of the kitchen, the pen would either be against one of the benches (so he could likely still jump over it) or block off the doorway entirely.  I could just make that one bench bunnysafe and make sure there is a step for him to safely get up and down, but I’m not sure if that would deter or encourage him from trying the other benches?

Today he peed outside of his cage twice (this is the first time going outside of his litterbox) so now I have that added stress to watch out for too.  I’m hoping he’s just still dealing with leftover hormones as I think he was only neutered less than 2 weeks ago?

            Anyway, this is Gus
