My 5 month old rabbit is still getting discharge from his nose. My vet says it may be an irritant and he doesn’t suspect any bacteria or something. He flushed his nose last time we went to the vet and it helped for the few days after, but then it came back. I don’t know how to get irritant free.
He eats like there’s no tomorrow, so he’s great with eating, he runs and Binkies, cuddles and flops, and gets into trouble (carpet eater), so I don’t know if he is sick or what. I am truly scared to death. I don’t want to lose him. He’s only 5 months and I’ve only had him for 3 but he is my life now and I can’t bear to lose him. Please help me. I can’t go to the vet because my parents don’t want me to spend more money on him. I already spent a lot on other visits and on a neuter. I’m really. Really scared.

Any advice or concerns. AND PLEASE HELP ME STOP WORRYING, tell me what’s wrong to the best of your knowledge. Tell me if your rabbits nose is always wet.

Edit: I held a glass piece up to his nose and both sides had even amounts of moisture on it when he breathed. So there’s no blockage. Could he be hot? It’s 72 in my house.

Your vet didnt take a swab and test it? Is your vet qualified to work on rabbits? I would personally look for a second rabbit savvy vet to check out the issus and i wouldnt leave without a swab test done. It could be allergies, it could be snuffles, it could be something else entirely, but you wont know until the test is done

If you do a search here for “wet nose”, some threads will come up with people saying that their rabbit has a wet/damp nose, and that can be normal, but if you are seeing actual discharge, especially a thick or white discharge, that is not normal, and needs treatment. One old thread that I found,
https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/120436/Default.aspx, has comments by people that have lops, and I see that your bunny is a lop. I commented on that thread, regarding a past bunny who always had a damp nose, and he was a partial lop (helicopter ears). I have a lionhead rabbit now, and he has a damp nose, but not any discharge.  By the way, don’t comment on that thread or any other thread that is more than a few months old.

As Mikey said, it could be allergies, or it could be a bacterial infection, if your rabbit has a nasal discharge. A vet would have to determine that and find the appropriate treatment. If it is allergies, it could be caused by a particular hay you are feeding him, or it could be the litter you are using, or it could be some other allergen in the house.

Yes, tobyluv, my Leopold has a “damp” nose. It’s caused by condensation. His nostrils will have a little dampness to them, but there is no discharge. When I say discharge, I mean snot. LOL It would be thicker and running down from then nose. It can be clear or milky. Wooly has snot. He has a tooth root issue. You would likely notice strange sounds when he is breathing. It will sound like his nose is stuffy.

If there is congestion or a discharge, then I would suggest having the vet do a culture to determine if bacteria is causing the problem.

It’d doesn’t sound congested and he does have equal breath in both nostrils. But sometimes he does “whistle”. But only sometimes and mostly after he’s been running around and it’s been hot in my room.

And the vet said he doesn’t suspect anything as there is no discharge at all besides the moisture It’s clear and leaves my fingers slightly wet. Enough that I can feel it but not enough to be lubricating something with water Like if you dip your finger in water you can move it around easy. I can only feel the wetness on the finger I touched his nose with. Occasionally I’ll touch his nose and I can feel it with my other finger, but not often

That sounds like condensation to me.

So what does “condensation” feel like to you on your rabbits nose? Does it leave wetness on your finger that you can feel?

My rabbit also began “huffing” again. He blows air out his nose quick, but nothing comes out. I am very fearful and very sad that this is going on. I wish it would just stop completely. I am at my wits end here. I don’t want to have a rabbit with difficulties his entire life. And I mean medical difficulty. I really don’t want anything to happen. I’m going to switch the litter in a few days from pine saw dust pellets to paper pellets (yesterday’s news). I’m also going to get rid of the current hay and get a different hay and shake it out before I put it into the container to bring to my room.

Also. It gets way worse when his ears are really hot. Like it leaves a bunch of moisture on my finger where it takes a little while longer to air dry. Could it be that? I’m going to get a thermometer for my room and for his cage so I can monitor that.

Please help me more. Did your rabbit(s) ever have this? Did it go away? Did it lead to any complications or deaths? Will I have a disabled rabbit?

If his ears are hot and hes breathing weird, thats a sign of a fever in that moment. Did you bring this up to your vet? If its happening often but nothing else is wrong, youll have to find ways to help him cool down. Like ice bottles, a fan or two, ect

I put a fan up and then he cools down completely. And the nose thing calms down. And his ears are not only when I’m hot too. I think there’s something wrong in my house with the temp. Whenever his ears are hot, I’m usually complaining that it’s hot in here too.

Ears are not a good indicator of core body temperature, fyi. They regulate their temperature through their ears so they can vary from hot to cold.

I was taught to take bun’s temp when I adopted him. Have you been shown how?

This whole thing may not be as bad as you think. If you doubt your vet’s diagnosis then get a second opinion.

                            Thanks everyone for your responses!!!!!!
Unfortunately I realized that no matter what anyone tells me, I will always be skeptical even when I don’t want to be. So I decided to find a new vet AND I FOUND ONE. that’s pretty rare where I live. They charge a fortune and a half, but it is totally worth every penny. I would do anything for my bunny. And this vet is SPECIALIZED in rabbit veterinary not just “specialized” like my other vet(s).
I have the appointment set for Tuesday and will update you guys then

I feel so happy that I’m finally going to get answers!!!
