        Hey!

Jasper went in for his first check up with the vet yesterday since we adopted him a week or two ago. It turns out he has mites! Other than that “he’s so handsome and what a great personality.”

My vet set us up on a course of invermectin injections. One every ten days for a total of three injections.

I’ve googled and googled harder than I’ve ever googled and there isn’t really any resource on how to clean to prevent mites for a house rabbit.

Jasper is cage free when we are home but spends time in his xpen too. We have wood floors and lots of rugs. So how would you start to clean and how thoroughly? I took all his stuff into the tub while all the fabrics were going through the wash. I washed everything with hot water and a all natural dish soap and rinsed and dried. Wiped down the cage bars lightly and I tried vacuuming but we just have a little like dust buster.

I want to be a crazy person and like strip down everything burn it. I want to wear different clothes when interacting with jasper then burn them after. Do I need to vacuum and wash places he hasn’t been such as on the couch? But I could have brought eggs in there or something. SOoo any advice or reassurance would be great! Thanks!. Oh also we got some ear drops for the dog so she’s being treated at the same time.

Ear mites are super common in buns and nothing to stress about. You can’t avoid them since they’re often in the hay we get for our buns. Just get a supply of Revolution/Stronghold drops from your vet – use the kitten/puppy dose once a month and voila! No more mites.

Yes, I thought Revolution killed ear mites also…it’s primarily intended for fleas.

Actually, my understanding is that Revolution does not kill fleas and mites.  It prevents them from reproducing.  Since their lifespan is very short, and they can’t reproduce, Revolution gets rid of them.

Yes, that’s the mechanism of action. The duration of revolution is about 8 days, so you do a repeat treatment to get rid of those that have hatched meanwhile.
              It’s generally very effective.

Revolution is a great preventative. If you’re worried about fleas and mites in the rugs, you could treat them with diatomaceous earth. It’s non-toxic, but you will want to avoid having your bunny in a position where they can inhale it since the powder could cause respiratory irritation.
