My rabbit just ate a pretty good chunk of avocado (11pm right now). I knew it is bad for rabbit, but it was too late!!! We usually don’t leave it on the table because we know she likes to jump onto the table and eat stuff. But somehow there is a stray avocado!!

I also saw couple posts about this… Do i have to bring her to the vet (tomorrow) or should i monitor her for the next 2 days???? Is this really serious??? Anyone know any rabbits who died because of this?

She is not showing any abnormal signs at the moment, she is still binkying and eating hay like nothing bad has happened!!

This is how much she ate, this avocado is from mexico, is this a lot??:

Avocados contain a toxic principle known as persin which can really affect a rabbit. If ingested it can cause respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the heart, and even death.

So eating avocado flesh, skin, and even their leaves and branches can have a detrimental effect on them.
          I copied this from http://www.onlinerabbitcare.com/can-rabbits-eat-avocado/
I would monitor all night and take her into the vet in the morning if I were you.

OMG! I had no idea avocado is toxic to buns. I hope your little one is ok, skysblue.

Chewie always eats little bits of avocado from my salads or sandwiches – I figured it was similar to banana, so I didn’t even look it up (especially since he was always totally fine).

He hasn’t had it in a while – because I haven’t found any nice ripe ones at the store in a while – but no more from now on.

            Thanks for posting this, kmurphy.

The leaves, skin of the fruit, and pit contain the most persin. The actual flesh of the fruit has less. Rabbits are sensitive to it, but lethal dose is unknown.

Signs of toxicity in rabbits include:
              • Inflammation of the mammary glands
              • Decreased milk production
              • Difficulty breathing
              • Fluid around heart
              • Heart rhythm problems
              • Death

I don’t know how much a rabbit has to consume in order to experience symptoms. Interestingly, there have been reports of bunnies eating a small amount and are seemingly fine afterward. I would definitely keep a close eye and make an appointment with the vet ( or at least call and ask for advice).

Hope she’s doing alright! They can give some activated charcoal to treat if necessary. Hopefully it won’t come to that.
                Keep us updated.

Just called the vet office (8am right now). They said i should try to feed her again and make appointment if the rabbit is not eating. Because last night i left a bunch of hay before i sleep like 12am and this morning most of them are gone and the rabbit is just lying down in the litterbox causually eating little straw of hay.

She still reacts really well when i hand feed pellet and very active wanting to roam the house. However i dont think she will touch the refilled-hay for the next couple hours because it is usually her nap time so she wont be eating. Looks like i just have to monitor her more. This rabbit is a handful!!

Is kitty litter bad for rabbits? Some of my friends say it’s fine, but others say it’s really bad.

Hi Chewy, this thread is a little old, usually members are asked not to revive old threads as it can cause confusion. If you’d like to post a topic, click on the Add Topic. Having said that, I’ll answer your question here Kitty litter can be okay. It needs to be non clumping, paper or wood based and have no additives (scents for example) I myself use Pets at Home’s own brand of wood pelleted cat litter and it’s perfectly safe and works wonders!

Thank you Sarah! Yes, paper and wood-based cat litters are safe to use. I buy Yesterday’s News sometimes. If you have any more questions Chewy, please start a new thread. I’m going to lock this one.
