I recently adopted a year old female bun a few days ago, when she was brought to me she had just been spayed the day before, for the first two or three days she was using the litterbox with just a few droppings here and there and no pee but two days ago she started peeing and pooping outside the box as well as in it. The first day it was one spot and today when I came home from work it was three different spots. I’m new to rabbits and I’m not sure if this is a territory thing. I’ve been researching it and I see some people saying you shouldn’t clean the poo but clean the pee but I’ve been cleaning it all. I keep her in a pen in my room but its a small room so I move it to the hallway and extend it so she can have more room to move around. Any tips would be great. Thanks in advance

It’s normal for bunnies to go off their litter box habits in a new territory (so your home) AND while their hormones settle down after a spay (for several weeks). So both scenarios are going on here. It will most likely go on for several weeks and may get worse before it gets better. Be patient.

When I litter trained my buns, I put the poos in the box and then cleaned up the pee with a paper towel and put that in the box for a while too. You can also try letting her choose the spot where her box goes. If there is a spot she is peeing/pooping on a lot, try putting her box there. And you can also put lots of fresh hay on in her litter box to encourage her to spend more time in there. Bunnies love to multi-task.

Hope this was helpful. Congrats on the new bun.
