I recently got a rabbit hutch/ chicken coop for my bun. It is 2 story with one of those little ramps with the bumps that you find in chicken coops a lot. My bun hasn’t been using it. Can rabbits go up those ramps? Is it just something they need to get used to? It’s wooden- do they have trouble gripping that? It’s pretty steep but it IS meant for chickens or Rabbits. Please help!!!

Lots of rabbit hutches and cages are manufactured with ramps. Unfortunately, pretty much all ramps in those hutches are too steep, not to mention rabbits struggle with ramps anyway because ramps are unsuitable for them. Their body type is not designed for using ramps (going down especially) and without paw pads it makes it even more slippery. They simply have no means to grip a ramp to be able to navigate it safely. I have seen rabbits that have gotten used to ramps, and going up is not so bad, but also when they’re going down it’s more of a controlled fall down the ramp than careful navigation.

If you can, I would remove the ramp completely, and put a box, or plastic tub or anything that can be used as a step underneath the hole for the ramp and see if your rabbit will use that to get up and down.

Rabbits can go up and down ramps, but they don’t if they have a choice. I made a ramp in my outdoors hutch-run but the buns don’t use it, they just hop up into the hutch from the run. Silly me for going to the trouble of making a ramp =) Azeranes suggestion of boxes to climb on is clever and much more suited for buns. Buns don’t really walk, like we think of walking, but chickens do.

That great! They are often a bit reluctant to try new things.
