Poor Rumball. The other evening I was carrying him, wrapped in a towel, back into his area. He usually waits till I put him on the floor, then hops away thumping at me. This time though, he decided to jump from my arms.  He landed awkwardly and I was scared he could have injured his back. He seemed to be moving okay but was licking at his incisors.

He was very upset at my handling him further as I checked his mouth. One upper incisor looked a little crooked and there was a very small bit of blood but generally, things seemed okay. Still, I felt bad about the whole incident.

I watched his behaviour that night and the next day and nothing set off any alarm bells.

Tonight I decided to get another good look at his mouth. I discovered one of his lower incisors has completely broken off.

I wonder if it fractured initially then broke completely away later.  I also cannot see any peg teeth, though this might be due to his age?? I’m a little paranoid now. I had an appointment for Gooseman on Monday morning but I’m thinking I might take Rumball instead.

Am I over reacting do you think?

          Aww dear!!
I think it cant’ hurt to get him a little check-speaking from personal experience at least-my vets have never minded when I’ve snuck another one into an appointment-so I’m not sure I’d do Rumball instead of Gooseman, but just show up with both and tell your vet what happened.

Is he eating ok? If you have meloxicam at home it might be worth giving him some in the mean time.

Haha that’s cheeky! Though, as frequently as I’ve been there lately, they possibly wouldn’t mind.

He’s eating well. : ) I actually gave him a dose of meloxicam the night it happened. Glad I did!

That is scary I had a very similar scenario once where Bandit leaped off the table at the vet clinic and landed on his jaw, he was very lucky to only have a slightly cut lip and no tooth damage. (This was the first week I had him too so it was really scary.)

I suppose at least the good thing if it’s broken off it means that most of the impact really absorbed into that area of the tooth, so hopefully you won’t see any root damage or misalignment later on. I suspect that the top incisor that is matched with the broken lower one may need a trim between now and when the lower one finishes growing back, but hopefully that’s all he’ll need.

If it were me, I’d phone the vet and just tell them you need to bring both bunnies in because Rumball snapped an incisor and you need it checked ASAP.

I think I will try get both seen. I’ve just discovered a sore near Gooseman’s mouth on the “good” side of his face. (he has some paralysis on the other). The vet is very close so even if I have to take them in at separate times, I’ll take whatever spot they have available.

Best of luck with it and keep up updated on both!

                      Thanks! I will.

I’m hopeful the sore is just a bit of dermatitis from fur being wet there. I noticed it has been a few times after he’s had a drink. I really don’t want to think too much about other possible causes tbh!

Poor Rumball…. Unfortunate they sometimes feel the need to jump from the arms of people they trust. No, bunny….you can’t fly with those big ears…

Best of luck at your vet visit.

A small update. I was able to get both bunnies seen Monday.

Between Sat and Monday Rumball also lost the upper incisor. The vet discovered this. So both his upper and lower left incisors have snapped off at gum level. Bunny McPhee!!

He also couldn’t spot the peg teeth. He thought everything looked okay though. At least I won’t have to worry about the opposing tooth over growing. He checked over the rest of him and thinks he’s in good shape. I think he’s too thin, vet disagrees.

He’s happy with Gooseman also. Even thinks there might be some bone growth going on where the mandible had thinned. Hard to say for certain without xray. The ear isn’t blocked up so I’m able to add drops again. And I’m trialing a week on nose drops to see if it helps before going back on injectables.

The vet thought the sore near his mouth was a cut or bite. Said it seemed like a scab that is not new.
I couldn’t figure out how he could have a cut there. Potamus and he get along well and it didn’t seem likely she’d bit him.
After I got home and put them back in the room, I remembered. About 2 weeks ago, the barricade that divides the room came partially down. It was in the morning and when I went to check, Ailis and Rumball were hopping around on Potamus and Goosey’s side. I was actually surprised there wasn’t evidence of fighting. Looks like somebun got a nip at Goosey’s face though.

Glad to hear Goose’s sore had such a “natural” explanation!

Yes lol. I had completely forgotten and hadn’t found any injuries on them at the time. I actually was joking to a friend about speed-bonding them when it happened, I had found Goose was sitting by the water bowl, just watching the 2 curious intruders hopping about. Potamus was hiding under small table but was guarding too.

It makes you wonder where the teeth went…. Did he just swallow them, or are they somewhere on the floor for you to randomly discover at some future point in time  I’m glad to hear that the vet thought positive of both bunnies though. Here’s hoping things continue to heal well.

I wondered about that too! I wanted the vet to check they hadn’t been embedded in the gums anywhere.

I’ve already swept up in their area and changed the litter. I was unaware of the missing teeth at the time so I didn’t look out for them.

Glad everything turned out alright for the most part. Flying buns are a hazard indeed.

Bam tried to fly today =( He refused to eat a treat, I gave him fibreplex and simethicone, he was not happy about that and tried to fly. Silly bun!

I remember when my dog lost her baby teeth, I only managed to find one. There must’ve been 27 more of them and not all of them could’ve popped out when we were outdoors, I think. I saved the one I found in my jewellery box. Yes, silly.

How odd about Rumball’s peg teeth. Is it common they lose them as they age?
