Hi guys! New here over at binkybunny and just wanted to ask a few questions about breeds. I am going to be a second time bunny mama – I used to care for a rex bunny who passed away 2 years ago and was really sad about it for a while. But I think I’m ready to own another bun and would just like to ask about a few mixed breeds that my breeder has for me to choose from. I’ve been able to find a really good, respectable breeder so I’m pretty impressed with the quality of her bunnies.

One bunny is a Holland x Netherland – been trying to research but cant seem to find any information about the temperament of these mixed bunnies and another is a Lop Lionhead. I was initially looking to own a Holland Lop but there aren’t any bunnies available yet so I was leaning towards going for these mixes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

        Thanks!

There is no such thing as a set personality for a mixed breed, which is why you can’t find any information. Mixed breed rabbits can have any sort of temperament, some may take after the buck, some the doe, some a mix, and others may be like neither of the parents at all. That being said, Netherland Dwarf are known for being highly strung (though not all are), they can be skittish and hard to handle which is why they’re not recommended for young owners. Holland lops on the other hand I believe are more laid back, so having a mix of those you really could end up with anything when it comes to personality.

If you’re looking for a particular temperament in a rabbit, your best bet to get what you want is an adult rabbit from a rescue. They will be able to tell you the temperament and personality of each of their rabbits. Rabbit personalities really don’t shine through until they are adults, so picking a kit is really just a game of chance.

I second everything Azerane said. Another rule of thumb, the bigger the bunny, the calmer they are. Small breeds tend to be a little more high strung. But you have to keep in mind that rabbits are bred for looks (to be shown), rather than for temperament like dogs for example. So, even within a certain breed, there can be a wide range of personalities. With mixed breeds even more so of course.

I know you didn’t ask for advice on picking a breeder, so I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but I think you might want to reconsider your choice. I know it’s hard to backtrack after you’ve found a breeder you feel good about, especially if you’ve looked at their baby bunnies. It’s very hard to find a good breeder, and one thing they have in common is, they never mix different breeds. There’s nothing wrong with mixes, I have one myself and they make wonderful pets. But the fact that this breeder intentionally produces mixes makes me question their reputability and breeding practices in general. You might want to consider checking out rescues in your area. As Azerane said, personalities develop after they reach adulthood, with a baby bunny you never know what you’ll end up with.

I have a lion lop. She’s a patient, tolerant, and super lazy bunny. That being said, I agree with what’s been said already. Adult bunnies are much easier to tell their temperament. Bunny puberty will change a loving fluffball into a tiny furry demon.

But I also understand you may be in a place where rescue bunnies are hard to find. Our shelter rarely has bunnies. We drove 2 hours just to get one bunny from a shelter. If this is the case, I can see why you would want a breeder.

Overall, I think lops tend to be more on the passive lazy side, if that helps.

              Good luck!
