We adopted Ash this week and want to introduce him to Gus and Mochi soon but I keep reading about a 30 day quarantine period. Granted this is mostly on breeder sites due to the snuffles epidemic from getting new breeder bunnies. But I’m paranoid cuz we had to treat Gus for snuffles in January, but when we went back for a follow up visit cuz his nose still looked wet/runny, we saw a different vet that said he doesn’t have an URI but it’s likely due to dusty hay. So idk if he did have it and got better or didn’t have it and we medicated him unnecessarily. Mochi didn’t get it and they live together. Regardless, it was very stressful for all of us. But I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary with our new little Ash, he is pottying and seems to be eating (he’s smaller and so he’s eating less than I’m used to seeing). So how long should I wait?

I think a quarantine period is an excellent idea. It will also give Ash time to settle in and get used to you, and you can make friends with Ash. I would do the thirty days-that sounds like a great time period.

It is wise to have a bit of a quarantine period, but if he’s coming from a shelter, I assume he’s had a vet check and perhaps been there for a while before he was adopted out? I found my 2nd bun outside so I had a 30 day quarantine, but that was because we have myxomatosis here and I had to make sure he was healthy + have him vaccinated before he could meet my first bun. I’d not assume it’d be the same with a shelter/rescue bun. If he had mites or worms or something when he came to the shelter, I think the shelter would have had him treated for that? You could perhaps wait a week? If he has sth, like some intestinal parasite or fur mites, the stress of being adopted into a new home could surface, but it’d probably do so within a week (swith symptoms like diarrhea/really loose stools or dandruff with hairloss) and get him treated before you let him meet your other buns.

Sometimes snuffles are caused by bacteria (pasteurella) that are commonly found in most bunnies’ nasal cavities. Some buns get the snuffles from it, but the majority of rabbits just have the bacteria and never fall ill from them. It’s not known why some buns get sick and others don’t. But dusty hay is a really common cause of sneezing and snuffles-like symptoms too, so that could very well have been it. It’s hard to tell after the fact, obviously.

I wish you the best of luck and hope to hear more about how you get on!!!

We had a bunny from the local rescue come specifically for a bunny date, they wouldn’t do that if they thought there was any risk? I’m now marathon bonding, started the day after he arrived. I guess it depends where the bunny came from, this little boy had been living with a bunny foster mum since last year.

Thank you for all the responses!

Perhaps adopted was the wrong word. He was a craigslist bunny. Already neutered and about 2 years old. Since he wasn’t a little guy from a breeder I said adopted.

I will be patient and wait the 30 days. I’d definitely be kicking myself if something did spread to Gus and Mochi. I didn’t even consider skin parasites, he has such long fluffy fur that I would probably miss them even if I checked. I’m gonna schedule him an appt for a check-up just to get it out of the way.

                Thanks again!
