Hi, all.. new member here. I adopted two shelter rescues some months ago and theyve been responding really well to me and my partner.
I worry a lot about their health, though, since I’m a first time rabbit owner, and since this just cropped up, I thought I might bring this up to people who might know better than I do if something is wrong.

Poppy, my New Zealand White (I think? I am guessing at the breed because the shelter identified her as a Florida White, but her ears are much bigger than typical Floridas) recently developed a ring around her pupil. She’s albino, so she has pure red eyes, but today I noticed there was a dark, inky brown ring covering a good 25% of her iris. She’s behaving normally, and eating normally (she’s begging me for food as I type this, haha) and otherwise seems to be fine, but that ring is new and I worry that maybe she bruised her eye somehow, or that maybe there’s an infection.

I intend to call the vet in the morning, but I feel like I can’t sit still if I don’t at least try to get some answers. Thank you in advance for your help!

Huh, that’s interesting. Can you post a pic? I would like to see this.

This is her ‘good’ eye; how they should normally look.

This is the ‘bad’ eye, with the partial ring around her iris.

And a closeup for good measure.

It looks like it might be a thick cataract of some sort

It looks like she might have had a bleed in her eye (hyphema). Maybe she has knocked it somehow.. Best to get it checked out.

She is still acting okay, eating etc?

It does look like a bleed. If you google hyphema you get lots of pics of human eyes that resemble your bun’s eye. It’s most often caused by trauma. You should contact your vet, the blood could elevate the pressure inside the eye and lead to more serious problems. So call your vet and ask.

Ah, now that I can see it, I would have to agree with the others. It does look like there was some bleeding.

                      What a beautiful bunny!

How did you make out at the vet?
