        Hello!

I’ve been trying to determine the gender of my new bunny, and I’m not all that sure if I’m correct. From what I can tell, I’ve got a young female… but I’m still not all that sure. Here’s a couple of pictures if anyone could confirm for me…

I bought my bun from a pet store about a week ago. They told me it was about 3-4 months old. At which age should I look into get him/her spayed or neutered? Will litter training be easier at that point?

I’m afraid I can’t help with the gender identification, but I can tell you that boys can be neutered as soon as their love beans drop (at around 3 or 4 months, usually) and girls can be spayed at around 5 or 6 months. And yes! Litter training is much easier after the procedure. As is pretty much everything else. lol

You’ve done well to get such clear pictures. You just need to press down a bit more to make the genitals pop out a bit more.

It looks like a girl to me, but do as Jersey says and press down a bit more. Girl parts will pop too, but not at all as much as a boy’s. A girl can be spayed at 5-6 months as Q8 says, but your vet will of course have to decide.

My bun Angel is 3 months old and we took her to the vets to have her sex confirmed last week. They said usually around 3-4 months old, the testicles should be dropped, so if by then you can’t see/feel them, then you can be 95% sure of the bun being female. Before a spay/neuter, they’ll double check the sex again, just to make sure there hasn’t been a mistake. My vet said she’s heard of other practices where they started a spay, only to find out the bun was actually a male!

Looks a bit like a girl, but I agree that a better picture would help.

Young rabbits are infamous for being hard to sex! As Mel says, the vet should check again right before the spay. We’ve had several stories here from members who’ve taken their little girl to the vet to get her spayed and came back home with a little boy. And vice versa.

I once saw a bun on Instagram who’s worried mummy thought her little girl had developed some sort of weird lumps on her belly…Well, her bunny wasn’t a little girl and the lumps weren’t exactly lumps…
