My bun of love is so sick please any information you may have my help. he free ranges around the house a must have gotten into something in the garage as found him there last night just bloated on the floor. i am not sure how long seen him yesterday morning and seemed fine but was very busy so didn’t get to really play with him. He is admitted at a vet emergency in colorado but there is no vet specialist on rabbits the two in town are out of town! his condition is stable he is on iv and in a warmer because his temp is low X-ray shows a lot of gas but no blockage we can see. he is on pain meds and gas drops as well everywhere i search says well he is basically going to die no matter what. Have you or someone you know been able to cure this? he also got pineapple and papaya juice. I am at such a loss searching everywhere for just something to help him..this vet is not comfortable with surgery or going down his throat and i also read its basically pointless. He is so special to me this hurts. Please pray for him he has a little sister at home that misses he brother dearly. His diet is very good and he gets the luxury life I am just so thrown!

Also he is not eating and was tolerating the pineapple juice but no poop or anything since yesterday which seemed to be fine. I can only think he stepped in something in the garage and licked his foot like hair color or something as i have a salon in my garage. he is not tempted by an treat. just a sad bunny with an upset tummy but he is enjoying his belly being massaged…

Im sorry to hear this ShariLeigh! Lots of {{{vibes}}} for your bunny.

This is the only thing I could think of that I’ve read on Bloat in rabbits.
            http://bunnylu.org/bloat.php

It does describe a treatment protocol, but of course, the vet would have to be willing to do this.(catheter down throat into stomach to decompress). It sounds like they are not wanting to do this?  If so, then it’s just a matter of keeping him stable and waiting for the gas to pass naturally. I’m sorry that’s not much help.

Yes, I’m reading this is not always successful also, and can lead to complications. But it seems to be the only manual method to release the gas.

Have they given him anything for the gas? Even just simethicone could be a help (it’s infant gas medication). It’s perfectly safe and doesn’t react with other meds as far as I’m aware and can just be used as a preventative, so giving it if gas wasn’t the problem, isn’t a problem. I’m not sure if simethicone is beneficial in actual bloat cases, but if they’re just waiting for him to pass, it could help.

I’m so very sorry. As Jersey says and you’ve read yourself, a catheter down the throat is what’s recommended if nothing else helps, but rabbits have a very narrow passage beween their stomach and esophagus, so I can see how your vet might be afraid he’ll just hurt him further. I so hope he can pass the gas on his own.

                  Lots of vibes for him.
