I’m getting married in June and my then husband and I are headed to the states (we live in Ireland) for 2 weeks – 10 days in South Beach, Miami and 5 days in NYC – I can’t wait! I’m feeling really stressed about getting someone to look after Theo though. I don’t think its fair to ask a family member/friend to care for him for 2 and a half weeks (including wedding etc) but I’m struggling to find a sitter / boarding kennels for him.

We went to view a boarding kennel-type set up for rabbits yesterday before booking and the cages were no more than 3ft by 2 ft and when I asked the girl if they had exercise pens for them – to my horror she replied that they just live in the cages! and when I asked her if we needed to bring our own fresh veggies for him she replied ‘I can get a bag of carrots or something for him’. I was horrified – this girl said she had 2 rabbits of her own but clearly has no idea how to properly care for a rabbit!! Theo is spoiled to be fair – he has so much room and only the best of food etc.

Has anyone any advice on what to do in this situation? Has anyone used rabbit kennels and found them good? At this rate I’ll not be able to enjoy my honeymoon cause I’ll be so worried about my baby.

Do you have a family member or friend that would be able to come over to feed/water once a day in exchange for pay? Like maybe a responsible teenage family member who drives? Teenagers are always looking to earn some extra money! That would be the best option bc bun could stay in his own environment.

But if you do need to go through a boarder, don’t worry too much about him being caged. It is just short term, and honestly, it might be safer for him, especially if they have different species of animals there.

This isn’t a forever situation, so please don’t feel bad for doing what is best for him to be cared for.

Congrats on the wedding, by the way! That sounds like it’s going to be an amazing honeymoon! Have you been to the states before?

Hi Beka! Yes those are great suggestions. I will look into seeing if someone would come in to visit and give food etc a couple of times a day. He’s a bachelor bun so I’m worried he will be really lonely while we’re gone. My fiancé is going to view another boarding kennels that specialises in small pets and exotics which have larger pens (6ft by 4ft) which means he could take some favourite toys and his large litter tray etc. My main worry is that his pooping and eating habits wont be watched closely enough incase he might get ill.

Thank you for your congratulations I can’t wait for the honeymoon – it will be my first time in the states and I’ve always wanted to go! 13hours in a plane won’t be fun though!

Get a IP camera and put it facing his area /potty to monitor his dropping and food intake behavior thru ur phone. It should only cost less than 25 bucks or so

                  Thanks for your suggestions guys.

We found a man who has converted part of his house with 6ft by 4ft pens – he specialises in boarding rabbits and guinea pigs. My fiancé went to visit today and he said the rabbits all looked happy and they had loads of space/toys/one on one care. The owner of the boarding kennels is mad about rabbits and seems to know his stuff. We’ve booked Theo in for a weekend in a couple of weeks as a trial to see how he gets on (we are on our hen/stag (bachelor/bachelorette) weekends away). He adjusts well to new places so I’m hoping he’ll have fun while we’re away. Fingers crossed.

                  Thanks again!
