Hi, I have a rabbit who is close to 7 years old and would always use his litter box to pee but since last week he has started to pee on the floor at the other side of the room near the cat food bowls. We were not sure if he was angry about the cats eating there or whatever, so we have removed the bowls and put them in another room, but the rabbit still goes and pee in that exact same corner. He still uses his litter box sometimes, but he pees on the floor close to 50% of the time, and mostly at night. He has never done that before, any idea what is going on.

Did where the cats eat change? It could be a behavioral reaction that then turned into a bad habit. You can try putting some favorite treats in they hay near the litter box so that will encourage frequenting the litter box and hopefully getting back on track.

I also encourage you to take him to a rabbit savvy vet. A UTI can cause this. Arthritis is also not uncommon in aging bunnies and can contribute a bunny not wanting to hop in the box.

He stills go in the litter box, especially when we are home, and if he goes to another room he doesn’t pee on the floor there and he goes back to its litter box when he needs to. It’s mostly at night when we are asleep that he seems to make a big mess on purpose and he always pee at the exact same spots at the opposite corners of its room (not close to its food or its litter box or where he usually sleeps), so this looks more like a deliberate action than a random accident.

We moved the cat food to another room, but the rabbit was used to the cats eating there before. He went to the vet less than 3 months ago and he was fine but maybe he got sick recently.

I agree that a vet visit is warranted as it could be a health issue. Best to rule that out.

You could also try adding a second litter box there to see if he’s willing to use it in his new favorite spot?

After some medication from the vet and a change to his diet, he is now cured and he’s back to using his litter box
