Mars is the black tan doe (I don’t mind about “masculine” vs “feminine” names). Reese is the chocolate tan buck, though I haven’t fully committed to that name, as I have some other ideas.

I’m an experienced bun parent but new to pairs. They’re from the same litter, both 11 weeks old. I know this is not the ideal bonding situation as things will change when the hormones kick in. I’m keeping them in separate condos and letting them out for several hours per day under supervision. They have their first vet visit tomorrow for a general check-up and to see how soon I can get the buck neutered (and later, the doe spayed) so I don’t end up with an “oops” litter.

Here they are exploring outside their condos, under supervision. Making a mess, being cute.

        Found a hiding place!

Still working on fully bunny-proofing my home. I watched them carefully around this lamp cord.

        Peekaboo!

        Mischief…

        A kiss!

How precious are Mars and Reese! I love tans. Sounds like they are going to be super spoiled with you.

Mars and Reese look cheeky and I just love their coats and colourings. I know what you mean about not being fully committed to a name. I changed Crysta’s name 3 times.
Welcome, and good luck with the bunny-proofing!

Yup, I’ve been considering Kip or Pan instead of Reese. Or if I name the chocolate as Mars instead, then Loki, Xena, Zara, or Athena for the black. Crap, too many possibilities.

Today they had their first vet visit and I’m happy to report they’re very healthy and great temperament. They were grumpy about being handled of course, but didn’t sulk too long afterwards.

Reese’s top teeth are a bit short. They said it might just be a developmental delay and to keep my eye on it, but its probably fine. He does chew on the cage bars a lot, so hopefully that isn’t causing an issue for his teeth. Also, he is scheduled for neutering the first week of Apr. Its a bit early but his testes have dropped.

Also, the vet is very good. I’ve had experience with bad vets, as well as really good vets in terms of handling and care but who try to upsell all the time. This vet is knowledgeable and experienced but also reasonable in recommended checkups and treatments.

They are both eating sooo much Timothy hay (much more than my previous Netherland Dwarf did)! I have to top it up 3x/day. When I wake up in the morning, its all gone and they’re acting ravenous. They’ve finished a 40oz bag in 3 days. Definitely have to buy the 90oz bags or find even larger bulk sizes.

Reese is not happy about nail clipping…

Checking the testicles. “Aaaaah, what’s happening?!”

              Bunny burrito to check teeth.

Love the bunny pics. I also almost named my black rabbit Loki, but I decided on Thor, which actually suited his personality. I like the name Zara, and I kinda like the “Zahra” spelling. Of course, I like superhero names, so I also vote yes on Xena. Athena is a lovely name, too. Some people have given their rabbits a first and last name, so I think those are adorable, but being an Aussie by nationality, I prefer short names with 2 or less syllables!

I vote Mars and Comet !!

Although Mars and Bounty go well together too….

Great pics ! Watch them though… oops tans don’t take long !!

I agree about shorter names. It helps for training too. Tans are intelligent, active, and great for agility courses. I prefer 1 syllable names, but 2 syllables can be ok. Hence, I’d lean away from Athena. Its also how I ruled out Jupiter.

I was going to go with Puck (the clever, mischievous sprite from Midsummer Night’s Dream). But, well… I swear a lot. He would get very confused. Lol.

My problem right now is that the chocolate buck acts like Mars but the black doe looks like Mars.

It’s OK as Mars is generally milk chocolate not dark choc !!!! LOL

I know, I KNOW you mean star/planet names… Star names? Hmmm, how about Brad !! (oh SO witty today VB, sooo witty!!!)

Lol. Actually, I chose Mars after the Roman god of war and destruction. Also associated with unbridled wildness and savagery. (The planets are named after Roman gods.) Its a bit unfair, as Tans aren’t hostile, but they’re dominant and aggressive in a hyper kind of way. The fur colors are also similar to the planet if you look up photos of Mars. Or yes, the coloring of the chocolate bar. It works on many levels.

Pan, Puck, Kip, Loki speak to the mischievous, intelligent, playful, wild side of the Tan personality. Kip has no particular reference, except maybe Rudyard Kipling, but it *sounds* playful & energetic to me. Unfortunately, one of its many meanings is “in leather-making, the hide of a young or small animal.” Might as well name him Lunch. *eek*

Xena, Zara, Athena are more akin to Mars, as mythic warriors (mixed mythologies, but that’s ok), reflecting the same personality traits as Mars. Again, Zara has no particular reference but just *sounds* like an Amazon warrior to me. But it has a strong association in people’s minds with the women’s clothing store.

Reese is a Welsh name meaning ardent, fiery. Which he certainly is. And it works as a cute complement to Mars. He is colored like a little peanut butter cup.

                          Banana for scale…

Mars is definitely fixed. I decided on that name last summer before they were even born.

I’ve put a lot of thought into it already and went through all the planets, Roman gods, Greek gods, Norse gods, other mythology, superheroes, chocolate bars, etc. I’ve narrowed it down to the selections I’ve outlined: Reese, Kip, Pan, Xena, Zara, Loki, with hesitations on some as I described.

I’m pretty sure it will be Reese because I put it out there a lot already in emails and with the vet. And because no one voted for it yet. He’s defiant that way.

Ok so about half a dozen people have reacted to my bunny photos with “omg, they’re HUGE!!!” They seem to think they’re the size of an adult cat. FYI, they’re about 1.7lbs each, whereas an adult cat averages 8-10lbs.

Neither my bf nor I can figure out what people see in the photos that makes them think this? There are so many loose references for size:
                                  – banana!!
                                  – trim/baseboard
                                  – office chair wheels/legs
                                  – electrical outlet
                                  – cat carrier

I thought maybe the vet photos were problematic since their fur is all fluffed up, legs sprawled out flailing, and those women are only about 5’2″. So I stopped showing those photos but people are still reacting the same?

                                  *puzzled*

They look like they have long ears, in proportion to their bodies. That might cause people to think they’re bigger than what they are. Either that, or the tan colouring’s creating an illusion.

Yeah, I’m lost. One person said it was because of their long bodies. “Long” compared to what else in the photo? And cats look bigger when they stretch out too. *shrug*

OK –  so it’s not the same banana (I’d call it a mid-size banana, not one of those huge great big ones that have no taste)….

but I couldn’t resist comparing anyway !!   LOL LOL  !!

Yes, bananas vary dramatically in size and are unreliable for scale. That is the origin of the joke. Its an ongoing internet joke/meme, esp on Imgur. The link and the international sizing chart are all in jest.
