We purchased a baby bunny 2 weeks ago. She is an adorable Netherland Dwarf. She is a sweet girl. Licks my daughter and I, demands pets and hops around the house after us. The only problem is litter box training. I set the litter box up in one section of the pen with lots of hay. She soaked the rest of the cage in urine and pooped a lot. So I set up another litter box in that area also with hay and treats. Now she pees and poos in the middle of her cage. She goes in the litter boxes too, but mostly the middle. I’m not sure what to do.

It can be difficult to litter train rabbits that haven’t been spayed or neutered, so you may not have much success until your rabbit has been spayed.

Have you been moving the poops and urine soaked bedding into her little tray to teach her where she needs to go?

I have the same problem. It seems about twice a day (sometimes more!) I am spot cleaning the entire cage. Any way to keep my bunny’s cage cleaner?!

I have placed soiled litter into the trays, maybe I should add more? It is frustrating having the cage get so dirty so fast. Not to mention, I don’t want my pretty baby girl living in her own mess.

Is there “bedding” on the floor of the cage?

For what it’s worth, I am having the same issues…

I even set up two litter boxes and he still pees on the outside! He pees on the floor of the cage where there is NO LITTER. It baffles me.

Yes, there is litter on the floor in the rest of the cage. Initially there wasn’t so she wouldn’t get confused about where to go. But I had to put some down because she was going to the bathroom on the bare floor and hopping through the urine.

You might just have to wait till you can get the baby bun spayed. My two baby buns are semi litter trained. They rarely pee outside the litter box but they poop literally everywhere and it drives me crazy. From this experience, I feel like its really hard to litter train non spayed/neutered rabbits…. But some people actually have a lot of luck litter training unspayed/neutered rabbits. I guess in the end it just depends on the personality of the rabbit.

Lining the floor of the cage with puppy training pads saves a lot of clearing up of small puddles, and avoids a bun sitting in any uncleared puddles. I have a longish haired guinea pig who just goes where he is, and lining the cage with training pads keep his fur clean and dry and save him daily baths. They need changing around twice a week.

My unpaired bun wont go in a litter box, so I cut puppy pads into bun-butt sized rectangles, and leave them in the two corners she likes to use as toilets, and she is happy with that. Its quick and easy to change for clean ones.

Training pads are also good post-spay, to keep the wound clean and dry, while leaving it easy to see how much pee and droppings a post op bun is producing.
