        Hello everyone…

I’m sorry I don’t make it into the forum so much anymore, but I wonder if I could ask for some vibes for my wee Fiver? He was having great pain all last night and early today I took him to the vet, who thought he might just have a urinary tract infection. He just called me awhile ago and said he’s had to take Fiver into emergency surgery for a large bladder stone. I am so very scared for him, and angry at myself for not noticing he had discomfort sooner and taken him in before this happened. He was so uncomfortable all last night and I had to rush him in first thing on only two hours of broken sleep after having spent all day in town the day before dealing with my sick cat…she is in chronic renal failure and also has hyperthyroid, so most of my attention has been focused on her…plus we are still trying to move outside of the state of Alaska and have been thwarted several times, my OH is in very poor health and we need to get closer to family.

So yeah…lots going on and this was just one more thing that really upset me and I am so worried for my little man. Any and all vibes and thoughts for him would be so very greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much!

ETA: Here’s a picture of him taken last May…he’d had health concerns then too and we had to do a lot of heat therapy to help him get better, so I just kept him on my bed with the electric blanket on.

Thank you for your vibes, everyone!

Okay, just got off the phone with his doctor.
The stone was lodged in the urethra, so there was some tug and pull to get it out. As such, he wants to be sure there was no damage done to the bladder wall and Fiver will be closely monitored at least through tomorrow. If he has no leakage, it will be okay to bring him home. However, since we live so far out, I may have him kept till Saturday to be certain he will be alright.

His vet is flying out tomorrow for two days (not sure why, I didn’t pry) and so the practice manager vet will be watching Fiver to see how he gets on. He is not out of the woods by any means, but the vet said his heart rate and breathing stabilized well after the stone was extracted, so he will be feeling much better now. He thinks he is doing well so far and hopes are high that he will recover fully.

I feel terrible still. I should’ve seen this coming with how sedentary he was getting and how I was feeding him. It just does not do to gamble with oxalates. We will be adjusting his diet along with the recommendations of the lab who will test his stone.

Personally, back to hay and water I think for my little man. They’ve not failed him to this point and it was only my stupidity that brought this on by adding veggies he did not need and that weren’t right for him.  And perhaps a little more exercise, whether he likes it or not!

Onward and upwards. If everyone would please continue to think of him and wish him well in his recovery. I am so very grateful to you all!  xxxxxxx

p.s. Did they do a conscious x-ray & discovered the stone?

Hey Jerz! Thanks for the well wishes for both Fiver and Tooey. I don’t know if it was a conscious xray, but I got the call about 3 pm that he was off to surgery after him being in there from around 10 am, so they’d tried everything else to get him going. I just hope his poor little bladder will recover properly!

I think it would be very good for there to be a visual chart somewhere on the site or even on the web that shows the different colors of bunny urine, because to be honest, his was about the color of coffee before this started. 0_0 I put it down to pigmentation from the kale I was feeding him, but I fed it to Mimzy too (not doing that anymore because he does have a sludge problem) and his urine only looks like grey poupon. (Sorry if anyone is eating right about now.) Pip can also have some darkish urine color, but she also has silt from time to time…I’ve had to take her off timothy hay too because it seems to make this problem worse. She only eats orchard grass now. Perhaps we will have to do that with Fiver too.

And thanks to everyone for thinking of my boy. Here’s the latest poop: (a cut and paste job, sorry it’s too hard to keep typing it all up)

The latest news for Fiver is that he was able to eat a little for himself, but he is still being syringe fed. He has been able to wee now, but of course since this is a VERY vascular area of the body, he is passing blood and the vet really wanted to keep an eye on him for a bit longer, so he is staying in hospital tonight and she hopes that he will be able to come home tomorrow. Sounds like he will still need syringe feeding here at home, so I’ll have to be sure I have a good supply of Critical Care.

The vet was happy with his progress so far though, but I do get the feeling he was really wiped out from the whole ordeal from the tone of her voice, so I am glad to have him stay in. I miss the little guy so much…can’t tell you how odd it is not to see him next to me in my bedroom. ;_; The whole house seemed a lot quieter last night despite the fact that he really doesn’t make a lot of noise.

Thank you for all the vibes and if you would, please keep him in your thoughts. I will let everyone know when he gets home. <3<3<3

Oh, Mimz….I’m so sorry to hear this and so sorry I’m only noticing now.

I’m so happy to hear he made it through the procedure okay. Sending him lots and lots of (((((Recovery Vibes))))) and will say a little prayer for him tonight.

Don’t blame yourself. You are a wonderful bunny Mama. And I know how hard it is when you have several high-maintenance animals. It’s hard to keep up with everything, meds, nutrition, poop monitoring, etc.

((((Hugs for you Mimz))))) I’m always here if you need to talk or a shoulder to lean on.

Thanks LPT! Yeah, it’s been a rough couple of days, but that seems to be the way my year is going so far, so… *shrugs*
Thank you for the well wishes and prayers, I think he needs them.

                                  And thank you too, JackRabbit.

Well this is the latest…it’s about 2:45 PM here and I am still waiting for the vet to have examined Fiver today. (She’s been delayed somehow, not sure if it’s by busy office or if she isn’t there yet.) They close at 5 so if they don’t get back to me before 4 PM, I won’t get there in time to pick him up anyway.
They say he’s still not eating by himself (he is being syringe fed) and they aren’t sure if he isn’t still having some discomfort when he passes poos, so I am wondering if I should leave him there one more night. They do think his surroundings might be a factor in his not eating, but I am worried about him being in pain.

If I bring him home though, and he has a problem, we’re sunk. I have rubbish ER vet or me…that’s it.

I know no one’s probably online right now, but thought I’d give the update. We’ll see if he comes home or not in a few hours. And I can only imagine how much this will all add up to in the end. I just wish we didn’t live so far out from the vets. I sprained my back again today (I’d really put myself down earlier in the week) and I am not keen on the long drive. I’m not sure he’d be able to handle it either.
                                  Worry, worry, worry…..

So glad to see you back here Mimzmum! I’m sorry to hear about all you and your family are going though. I hope you back feels better soon! That sure makes everything worse!

I don’t know if you remember, but Jack had surgery to remove a bladder stone, and before he had that, I didn’t notice signs of discomfort – but later realized his chocolate bunny position and eyes half closed may have been a sign — I just thought he was in bunny dreamville during those times since he didn’t grind his teeth.

And so even if your attention was not pulled to your cat, you may still have not known. They are just very good about hiding things even with experienced humans!

Sending continued healing vibes For Fiver AND you!

                                    Keep us updated.

P.S.: As I type this — I’m sitting on the couch in the bunnyroom hanging out with Aria, and looking over at the shelf, where the precious “Rucy” sculpture, that you and your daughter made for me, still sits and a wonderful reminder of her. Thank you for that!

Thank you Jennifer I do recall the statue, my goodness, I am so glad it still gives you a smile!
I did look up Jack’s thread here and read through it again. I was very encouraged because honestly, when I first considered a stone (especially since I knew Fiver had been straining to pass it for twelve hours that day) I feared the worst because I wasn’t certain he’d live through the surgery to remove it. It made my heart drop into my shoes when the vet said he was whisking him away to theater, and had he not been so good with Pip when she was so ill and helped Tooey with her hyperT, I would’ve likely just told him that we should let Fiver go. I just didn’t want to put him through any more.

But even though the stone was lodged dangerously and there was risk of bladder perforation, the vet pulled him through and well…he’s here today and came home well yesterday and went right for his hay basket, head first into it!
He’s had some accidents (and some on purposes) outside his litter tray today, but I expect that’s something we’ll see either stay or go as he heals. (Doing a LOT of cuddly cup laundry! ) I’m not terribly worried because when he is out on my bed, he often dives back into his pen for a wee, so I think he’s still trying to be conscious of it. But if that tray gets full quickly he’s not going to want to sit in it. So I have to be vigilant about cleaning it several times a day now.

He’s not back to drinking water like a camel, so I am wondering if that was another symptom of his stone forming? He was VERY often at his bowl or bottle for awhile there. Which was why the dark color of his urine was so puzzling. It is much lighter now, albeit tinged with red from his ordeal, and he’s not spraying the walls. Fecals are kind of getting dropped anywhere, but that’s usually as he is nearing time for his metacam dose, so it could be a discomfort response.

His suture area is HUGE. It’s got to be a 6 inch long incision down the midline. If I didn’t know better I’d think he’d been spayed! 0_0 But it looked beautiful this evening when I examined it.

Thank you, too, LPT, for keeping my little guy in your thoughts and prayers. I’ll have to try to get a picture of him when he’s more relaxed, for you. I can’t help but think of Stormy when I look at him, they were very much alike in body shape and I bet they would’ve loved to be friends.

Thanks again to all of you for your well wishes. It’s so comforting to know that BB.com vibes are always at work and doing good for us and it is wonderful to be here and know we are being thought of. xxxx

You mention that you should have seen it coming with the diet you were feeding, can I ask what sort of greens and rotation of them you were on. I know every bunny’s different, but it’s good to know what things didn’t work so that it’s easier to feed a better balance.

I’m so glad to hear he is doing so well after such a big ordeal. He’s probably just so relieved to not be in pain anymore. Don’t know about a bladder stone, but I had a kidney stone once and the pain was almost unbearable.

Would love a picture of Fiver. He’s such a cute little plushie.

Well, we’re almost a week on from his surgery and he seems to be doing okay. I keep thinking he might be uncomfy at times and I’m starting to see darker urine again, but he’s really not drinking much so I am wondering if that is the issue.
I also think he might be a bit incontinent now, but considering what he’s been through I shouldn’t be surprised.

I still haven’t heard back from the vet what the composition of the stone was. :-/ I have to go in to town tomorrow, and I need to pick up some more meds for my cat, so I’ll try to speak with him then.
