Marley has been litter trained for around 3 1/2 years now. He has a corner litter box with a grate that he spends no extra time in, just what is necessary. Lately he has decided to start peeing right beside the litter box. He still pees in the litter box more often than not, and right after I clean it he seems to go in it until there is poop on top of the grate. This has never been an issue before, and I’ve always tried to clean his litter box every other day, but even if I missed a day or two it has never caused him to go outside of the litter box.

Could this perhaps mean that he needs a bigger litter box? Or do I simply need to clean it every day to avoid this problem? Any ideas as to why he would start this out of nowhere? Thank you for your help!

The fact that this is new behavior is concerning. You haven’t changed the location of the box or the litter or anything? Change in litter habits can sometimes be due to a urinary tract or bladder problem. If it contines, I suggest a vet visit to rule that possibility out.

Is he neutered? If so, I would agree with LittlePuffyTail. It is concerning behavior.

No, I have not changed the location of the litter box or the litter. And yes, he is neutered.

This has been going on for about two weeks, and it’s very unlike him. He’s always been excellent about peeing in his litter box. I believe the last time he was at the vet was in November and everything was great at the time, but if this continues I will definitely consider a vet visit. Thank you!

Does anyone else have any suggestions on this matter? I have not taken him to the vet yet, and he is still peeing beside his litter box. I’m hoping it’s something simple like wanting a bigger litter box or needing it to be cleaner. What do you guys think?

You could try a bigger box or adding a thick layer of hay on top of the litter.
