Hi! I have a two month old Male Holland lop. He has been a wonderful addition to our family. We have had him for two weeks now and his behavior lately has been very odd. My main concern is activity, we do not have the money or the space to have a mate for him but we do have very flexible hours at work and spend lots of time with him when we are home (he is otherwise caged if we are sleeping or away). Problem is he won’t play with any of his toys but gets very frustrated even when we play with and pet him. He has taken to sulking by hiding under the couch until we coax him out and leaving little “I’m not happy with you” pees when he gets into one of his moods. I am not quite sure what to do. He has a spacious crate with a hide, he gets lots of time to run around, a balanced diet, lots of petting when he wants them and plenty of toys to keep him occupied. I’m just very frustrated with not knowing what it is he needs.

Ps. He had a vet appointment on Wednesday and has a clean bill of health.

He is at the age where he might be turning into a teenager so you should talk to you vet about getting him neutered in the future. His hormones may be causing him to have “moods” and pee on things. Another thing is that you have only had him for 2 weeks. He needs some time to get to know you. Maybe chill with him in an area where he has to interact with you, (can’t hide under the couch) but try not to pet him etc. and just let him get to know you. Some bunnies take a while to warm up. My bunny took about 3 months before he let anyone pet him!

kmurphy has pretty much covered it, depending on your bunny’s age he’s probably hitting puberty which is causes the moody pees. Rabbits are quite unique in that desexing often has very strong impacts on correcting behaviour (less so in cats and dogs). An entire male with no outlet can often get frustrated. Some are the sweetest things in the world still, but most have behavioural issues and even spray urine on people and walls etc. So definitely worth considering the snip.

Some rabbits are really big on toys, and sometimes you just have to find the right type of toy for them. Some like hanging toys, others like toss toys, chew toys, shreddable toys, rolling toys, etc etc. A toilet paper tube stuffed with hay makes a very cheap DIY toy that most bunnies seem to love. For some reason hay in a tube is suddenly more interesting than just hay
