Hi! I was wondering if a large size dog crate would be okay for a baby bunny? I would not be getting a Flemish, but more likely a lop, or lionhead. If it’s okay for them while they are babies, would I need to invest in a larger cage in the future?

What I am planning to do is keep the bun in his cage while I am at school, not home, or sleeping. I am usually home, so he would be in his cage around 12-14 hours, and out the rest. I need him to have a cage large enough so that he will be comfortable while I am not around.

Some recommendations for a cage size say a minimum of 2 feet by 4 feet. Others say a cage should be 4 times the size of your rabbit. Some of the larger dog crates would be okay in size for a bunny, but he might need more room as he grows. If you do get a dog crate, the ones with 2 doors are a lot easier to manage (getting the bunny in and out). If you want to give a rabbit more space, an x-pen is good for that. You have to make sure to get one that is high enough so that they can’t jump out, which is usually 36″ high or more. If you do get a cage/crate for your bunny, make sure that there is something soft for him to lay and sit on,such as fleece blankets, grass mats.
