Hello everyone, I recently rescued my holland Lop who was poorly treated and taken care of. He is now doing great, and he is in great hands with me now! Anyway, my rabbit is always very clean and has never had any matted fur problems. I brush him daily, he has developed some matted fur on the bottoms of his back feet and he HATES to be held. It’s been a struggle for me to be able to cut off the matted fur and I’m worried about knipping his skin so I haven’t tried to cut it anymore because he likes to squirm and so I let him go. Will matted fur take care of itself? Is it something an exotic veterinarian could take care of and is it something that could end up being harmful? I just want the best for my bun and any advice is more than welcome! Thank you!

When Chewie first came home from the shelter, he had really matted fur on his behind. I tried everything, but was hesitant to cut it, since he didn’t know me well enough to guarantee a struggle-free handling. So I finally tried using one of those metal flea combs – and it worked like magic! I gently tug-tug-tugged, and the matted bits just combed out. Worth a try…

My Bindi is unable to groom himself properly and gets very matted feet. I get my husband to hold him the same way we do his nails: baby burp style. I do like Q8 and gently tug them out. The worse mats are usually on the sides of his feet. A few bad ones, I took a small pet pocket trimmer to it and then pulled out the rest. Be very careful not to overgroom his feet as he needs the protection of the fur from sore hocks. However, leaving large mats can cause the foot to become unbalanced which can cause sore hocks.

We do this to horses if they burrs in their manes or tails, like there will be so many burrs that they’re mane/tail are solid burrs with no free movement! haha We take some WD- 40and spray it on the matted bits, you can put it on a cloth so they don’t have to hear the high pressure spray noise.

WD-40 might be okay for horses but not for bunnies since they will lick it off and ingest some.
