Hi there! I am so so happy to be apart of this bunderful website! Now, onto my question:

So, I was on Amazon.com making a cart for my future bun. As I will be getting a baby, I knew that Alfalfa hay and pellets are the best option. I placed some alfalfa pellets inside my cart, and as I went into the hay section, found it to be extremely expansive in bulk, also with not very good reviews. Then I saw a 10lb box of Orchard grass, and decided that that fit my price range.

I was curious as too if I can replace alfalfa for a baby buns diet, and substitute it for Orchard Grass? Are there any disadvantages? I just want what’s best for my new baby, and I will of course strive for the extra money that would purchase the Alfalfa if that is what he really needs. Thank you everyone!

Baby buns doesn’t absolutely have to have alfalfa hay if they get a good junior pellet. Junior pellets practically always have alfalfa in them. Alfalfa hay adds extra protein to the diet, but since a baby should be fed unlimited pellets, he’ll get what he needs from them. It’s excellent to introduce grass hay ( f ex orchard) very early, since grass hay is the most important food for a bunny, and we all know that good dietary habits is best established when the bun (or person, for that matter) is young. There is the added advantage that you don’t have to wean your bun off the alfalfa hay when he turns 6 months (or thereabouts). That is often a bit difficult, because alfalfa hay is much yummier than grass hay.

Bam is right. One source of alfalfa is sufficient. So if you have alfalfa based pellets, it’s fine to feed a grass hay.

you should also portion your pellets so your bun doesn’t get overweight.
alfalfa is like bunny drugs. bunny goes mental for it o.O
there are other websites beside amazon that sell cheap alfalfa hay and other hay in smaller packages.

Ok thank you so so much everyone! I will be sure to purchase the pellets, and the Orchard Grass Hay. Once in a while, I will get my baby some alfalfa hay for a treat as well. Wishing all of your bunnies happy Binkies!
