I’m not sure what happened. But Sophie and Bam are suddenly starting to fight. It happened out of no where. They were out exercising and they just broke out in a fight. I pulled them apart with my hand and petted them for awhile. Made sure no skin was broken and they seemed to have calmed down. 5 minutes later they get in a tuffle again! This time I shut the cage door because sophie ran out and Bam ran to his condo. So Sophie is now free ranging the living room and bam is in the cage. About 1.5 hours later I opened the cage back up because they were both sleeping and relaxed. Sophie went in the cage and tried humping Bam and then Bam retaliated and they ended up fighting AGAIN. idk what to do and idk why they’re suddenly fighting. Watching them interact through the bars I see Bam trying to groom her nose but then Sophie swats her front feet at him and hikes her tail up in an aggressive stance. What do I do? Why are they suddenly not getting along?

I’m sorry I’m new here and don’t know their history. How old are they, are they desexed and how long have they been bonded?

Bam is 2 years old and Sophie is 1. They’re both fixed and have been bonded since early December. I’m going to schedule a vet appt to rule out any sickness or pain for Sophie’s sudden aggressive behavior. I was actually able to get them cages together again and back to normal. But as soon as they are out exercising they fight and Sophie acts like she doesn’t recognize Bam. She is sneezing again so I’m wondering if maybe the congestion is compromising her smell in some way. I’m calling the vet tomorrow and hoping they can squeeze me in on their hAlf day to get sophie assessed after this last fight she’s missing some hair and bled a little. So I have them separated for the night. I hope Bam can forgive her and trust her again. He was merely defending himself.

Thanks for the extra info That’s a tough one, it could be because of illness like you said, or perhaps there’s just a bit of dominance tension still lingering. If that was the case I would have expected there to be other indications in behaviour before an all out fight broke out though.

I hope you can work it out with them. Any changes to the exercise area lately? New smells or furniture?

No changes at all that’s why I’m so confused. And they don’t even have a humping thing before the fight breaks out. It just instant fighting. No humping circle dancing or anything. She just attacks. I reassessed them this morning. Bam seems weary of her right now. Sophie tolerates his company in the cage but will attack if he approaches. I feel bad. If the vet clears her health and I can’t get them to re bond Sophie will have to be rehomed. I got her as a companion for Bam. I don’t want 2 separate bunnies and now I don’t know how goingnforward will be. I could tell Bam enjoyed the company. But now I’m hesitant to get another companion for him if it led to me rehoming Sophie. Hoping that won’t be the case though.

Sophie is put on Baytril and a follow up next week to see if it is making a difference. She has snuffles
