There’s a good chance it’s not blood, just red pee. Bunny urine can be very very concentrated giving it a dark brick red color.

Pour some hydrogen peroxide on it. If it foams, it might be blood, if it doesn’t foam it’s just dark pee.

Did you give your bun anything dark green leafy? Dandelion leaves cause my bunnies urine to look a blood stained colour, but it is fine.

However, if it is blood, I would think a trip to a vet is required ASAP.

Is bunny eating, drinking, hopping around, alert, inquisitive? If so they are probably ok. If bunny is hunched up, uninterested, then I would be concerned and ring a vet for advice.

if it’s blood, check for uterine disease, bladder infection or kidney stone. unfortunately there is no just medicine for it if thats the case.

If it foams go to the vet ASAP.

You can’t 100% confirm it as blood using the peroxide test, false positives are possible. However, most of the causes of a false positive are vet worthy anyway, such as bacteria in the urine.

False negatives are unlikely though. So since it often isn’t blood, it’s a convenient way to confirm that.

Blood in urine is not common. More likely than not, the red color you are seeing is plant pigments.

                        Here’s some pictures:

                        http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Uro_gen_diseases/generalities/Sludge.htm

The top has pictures of normal urine stains on fabric. If you scroll down, you will see that blood tends to be streaks, spots, or blobs inside a larger area soaked with otherwise normal-looking pee.

If it is blood there are many reasons it could be happening, and you will need to take your rabbit to a vet to have tests done.

In many cases suspected blood is just stained urine from diet. What have you been feeding him the day leading up to when he peed red? Banana would not cause blood in urine or the urine to turn red.

A picture might help. Did you get a picture of the pee spot?

Like I said, it is unlikely that it’s blood. What has your bunny eaten lately? Lot’s of foods have carotene.

Red pee looking like blood really is something that has scared many bunny-owners!
Here’s a nice article on just that, from the House Bunny Society:
                                http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-1/red-urine.html

(Since he is a boy, you can rule out vaginal discharge (of course).)
