I’m a first time bunny owner and I have two male holland lops that are almost 4 months old (both neutered). I’ve been feeding them unlimited timothy hay and about a half cup of Oxford young adult pellets each (I’ve been slowly introducing some veggies too). I’ve been limiting their pellets because if I don’t all they eat is pellets and they get runny poop (they have no self control).

Right now they’re both healthy and have good poop, but I’m concerned I’ve seen websites that say you should feed your bunnies unlimited pellets until they’re around 7 months of age, and others that say you don’t need to. Is what I’m doing okay?

What you’re doing is perfectly fine. When people say “unlimited” they don’t really mean unlimited in the absolute literal sense. After all, some bunnies are little piggies for their pellets and would eat and eat until they popped (not really, but you get the idea). Half a cup each is probably plenty. Hay is important, so you don’t want them to be so focused on pellets that they ignore the hay. So what you’re doing sounds reasonable to me. Of course, as they get older, you will want to restrict their pellet consumption further (and switch to an adult pellet). But for now, they are growing boys.

Thank you! That’s a huge relief!

Yep, 1/2 cup each sounds good to me too, they’re still getting plenty of nutrients from it and it’s far better than them getting sick from stuffing their little faces and eating too many pellets

If you have worries with overfeeding just give them unlimited hay and then greens and/or pellets once a day. You will save a lot of money. One large bail of hay from Tractor Supply costs 18 dollars and will stay good for months if you keep it from drying out.
