All excited for my new bun (a Dwarf Netherland) I went shopping for a cage, bedding, food, etc. before picking him up. Unfortunately the breeder claimed that the food I bought, which I got 25 lbs of, wasn’t the right kind. According to her my bunny needs 16% protein/20% fiber. The food I got was 18%/20%, which was actually the only ration I could find at both Farm & Fleet and PetCo. Is a 2% difference really that big of a deal? Do I actually need to throw out all this food? At the moment I’m feeding him some 16%/20% food that she gave me, but it’s almost out and I’d like to use the food I bought if it’s safe and healthy for him.

        Thanks!

Pellets should ideally only form a small part of any bunny’s diet, so it shouldn’t matter that much.

What matters is that your bunny is getting plenty of hay, some green leafy veg, and no big changes in diet. I would suggest mixing the 16% pellets with some of the new ones, so bunny’s tummy has a gentle switch between the two brands.

I think it’s ok if the bun is young. For an adult bun, I think 16 is a bit high.

A young bun can also have alfalfa hay, that’s another source of protein. You want to give grass hay too, because you want her to develop good eating-habits and grass hay is the best eating-habit a bunny can develop.

With a baby bun you want to offer unlimited hay and pellets. That way the bun eats according to her young body’s need. After 6 months you limit pellets to about 1/8 cup, take away alfalfa hay and keep the grass hay unlimited.
