I have been cold sore free for nearly 20 years. I have not had a cold sore since I was a child. Recently though I have been very very ill so my immune system has been down. I believe I am developing a cold sore in the corner of my mouth. Last night before I felt it I snuggled both my buns and gave them each kisses on the head and behind the eye. I may have felt a slight pain last night but attributed it to eating something and cutting my mouth. Today I feel it is a cold sore. I have read that cold sores are fatal to rabbits. I haven’t been able to find any information on incubation period or possible treatment. What are the chances I passed this onto my buns? Today it is a small sore spot, not raised or oozing. I’m terrified and having panic attacks. I would never forgive myself if I ended up killing my rabbits. Can anyone comfort me or know anything more?

Transmission of HSV from human to rabbit can occur, but it is very rare. There are a couple of scientific papers on it and both make note of the fact that very few cases have presented themselves. Considering how many people have cold sores, you would think there would be many known cases if the virus was easily spread from human to rabbit. In both of the papers, it appears as though the rabbits in question had been infected for several weeks before exhibiting neurological symptoms. Perhaps the rabbits’ immune systems had been compromised in some way? It’s impossible to know for sure.

Thank you for the information. I refuse to handle them at all for the time being. My husband is taking care of them. I’m seriously paranoid. I have anxiety issues so I know I’m going to spend the next month terrified. However, I did find comfort in your words. Knowing how rare it is helps. Breaks my heart not being able to love on them. It’s for their own good though!

Awww….Hugs to you. I have bad anxiety too…

I really wouldn’t worry too much. I would just refrain from kissing them (as hard as that is) and if you’re paranoid wash your hands well before handling them or their food.

I agree with LPT. It sounds like a plan. And try not to worry so much.
