My bunny is 2.5 months old. I just got him. Is it okay if I have him on only alfalfa hay? Or should I mix in some Timothy? Also how much vegetables should I give him in terms of portion size?

At that age you can mix alfalfa with Timothy and Orchard Grass. He will eat what he likes best…it is kind of funny watching your bunny selecting the exact straw of hay he wants to eat out of a big pile. By puberty he should not have alfalfa anymore or he will get fat.

Veggies are a different question. Some people say 1/4 cup of greens. My vet says greens about the same size as the bunny. I give my rabbits kale and lettuce (not iceberg, some vets say its toxic, others say it just does not have nutrients) in a pile their own size. Even with so many veggies they are at optimum weight ever since I severely limited fruits and carrots.

All of them are absolutely crazy about kale and it is cheap, $1.00 for a very large bunch.

I’m having trouble finding timothy hay these days due to my location. Would it be safe to give just alfalfa alone? I’m worried it has too much calcium and protein?

Any grassy hay will do, it doesn’t have to be timothy. It can be orchard, oat hay, rye grass, fescue, Bermuda grass, coastal, meadow. (Any type a horse can eat a bunny can eat.) All of it is fine to mix with alfalfa.

Young buns tolerate the protein and calcium well. Young buns need more protein than adult buns to grow, so it’s very important that they get that. Many young- bunny-pellets are alfalfa-based.

At 12 weeks you can start introducing greens. But before that, pellets and hay, grassy + alfalfa are the safest choices. Alfalfa is fine until 6 months or so.

Coco is probably going on a year (rescue bun, so not positive). I free-feed timothy hay and give her a big bowl of mixed greens twice daily. Finding timothy hay isn’t the problem – but it is SO expensive where I live! Amazon to the rescue. Here’s a link – excellent product and value, and free shipping if you find something else to buy along with it (gotta spend over $35 for free shipping). Chewing timothy hay all day has kept her teeth and weight perfect.
